Dharani

I woke to the sound of music. Opening my eyes I looked at the source of the sound. It was my new phone that Veera had gifted me last night.

"Sollu Veera..." I said over the call. "Innuma da thoongura?" I looked at the clock and it displayed 9am. "Achachooo!" I sat on my bed and I heard him laugh on the call. "Seekro va da. Oru surprise irukku". I adjusted my hair and clothes before stepping out of my room. Gesturing a good morning to Veera sitting on the dinning table with a coffee, I entered the bathroom for my morning routine. Refreshing after a bath I exited in fresh clothes and joined Veera in kitchen after a prayer in Pooja room.

"Happy morning Rani" I smiled at him and took the coffee he extended. "Happy morning Dhaaru" Shiva said as he sat on the dining table outside the kitchen. I sat next to him. "Veliya poriya da?" I asked as he sat well dressed. "Aama da. Inikku Sunday la. Friends veliya kuptaanga. Poitu game aaditu varen" I nodded. "Seri da paathu poitu va". Veera placed Dosa in a plate and handed it to Shiva. "Nee saaptu time ku kelambu da. Friends wait pannuvaanga la" he smiled as he ate the dosa. "Epo da samaikka lam kathukitta?" Veera chuckled. "Thaniya irundhu paaru da vaazhkaiye theriyum".  We knew three knew how much pain this simple line holds but we let it pass. Shiva had stayed in a hostel for his higher secondary education. Veera had come to Chennai and lived alone for two years now and I had been alone for years until these people returned.

"Aama.. Edho surprise nu sonniye. Ennadhu mama?" Me and Shiva looked expectantly at him. Veera placed a dosa on my plate and handed me his phone. "Un kanamma phone panni irundha ma. Na en number kuduthu irundhen. Avalukku pesanum nu thonum la" I checked the dial history and noted her number in my phone. "Enna sonna Mama?" Veera poured the batter for another dosa and made a perfect circle out of it. "Unna paakanumaam da. Neeye avalukku call panni pesen". Veera slowly poured some ghee to dosa while I dialed Aradhya. Shiva was busy eating his breakfast as this girl was foreign to him.

"Hello?" I said as she attended the call. "Dharu ka?" I laughed at it. Just how she can recognize my voice. "Aama kanama. Un Dhaaru akka dha". Shiva looked at me. "Dhaaru ?" he mouthed. "That's how she calls me" I mouthed back. "I thought only I called you that..." he said aloud. "Come up with a better name da then" he looked at me form head to toe. "Mudiyaadhu mudiyaadhu" he said as he entered the kitchen to wash his plate. Veera laughed at it.

"Oi Dhaaru. Irukiya ka?" I brought back my attention back to the call. "Sollu kanama". I ate a bite. "Adhu Veera mama illaiye.." maybe she heard Shiva's voice. "hmm" I hummed unable to say aloud it was Shiva's voice. She chuckled. "Peru solla mudiyaadha?" I hummed again and she laughed at it. Shiva exited the kitchen and entered his room. "Un periya mama kuda illa. Daksh um illa. Oru vela Shiva va?" she asked. "Hmm aama kanama" I sighed and she laughed. "Seri adha vudu. Na unveetuku vandhuttu irukken" I finished eating and entered the kitchen to wash my plate. "Super da. Epo vara?" I looked at the clock in the hall. "Dho ipo dha veetla irundhu kelamburen. Appa enna un veetla vitutu edho velaiya mudichitu evening alachittu poiduvaanga". I borrowed the batter from Veera to make dosa for him. He stood balancing himself on the near counter with a plate in his hand. "Super da. Seekro va. Naanga waiting" I poured some batter and made a thin dosa and Veera showed a super sign. I kissed on his fingers and he chuckled as he pulled his hand back. "Seri oru vishiyam sollu" Aradhya spoke on the call, "Na varum podhu Shiva veetla irupaara?" I made a thinking face. "Illa da" I replied. Veera asked what happened. I shrugged and placed a dosa on his plate. "Seri seri nalladhu. Ah apro.. Nee edhum thaniya cook pannaadha akka. Na vandha piragu serndhu pannalaam". I smiled at it. "Ok kanamma". We then bid bye and hung up the call.
