The gang made their way past the falls and the river and soon found themselves back on the road and following the sound of the wobbly, misshapen jazz music. They traveled for about another five minutes before they could start to see a small town coming into view. It looked like it had been pulled straight out of an old 1920’s silent film, but in color.
“Now this is my kind of town!” Huck cried happily. “I love old-fashioned stuff!”
“Quite quaint, isn’t it my friends?” Mouzart chuckled.
They soon came to the town’s entrance, where they saw a large wooden sign sitting by the side of the road in a small flowerbed.
“Welcome to Rooneyville,” Snag read, looking at the sign. “Population 101, give or take…”
“Rooneyville?” Huck echoed. “Hey, you mean like Mickey Rooney? Gosh, he’s one of my favorite old-time actors!”
“Is that so?” Mouzart said. “Well you have impeccable taste in the classics, Huckleberry! I’m quite impressed!”
They slowly made their way into town, walking past several shops and small theaters with large marquees. The sad-sounding jazz could also be heard alongside some out of tune piano music, attempting to play in ragtime style. Despite the dreary mood, Huck was smiling as he glanced around.
“This place is great!” he beamed. “I feel like I went back in time, only I’m still in the present, and in another land.”
“You are in another land!” a voice called.
The gang all began to gaze around. “Hark! Now who said that?” Snag wondered.
“Folks around here sure love to be heard before they’re seen,” Huck mumbled.
Just then, a white rabbit wearing a Charlie Chaplin like shirt, and a straw hat danced in with a cane. “Howdy-do and a hello to you!” he greeted in a sing-song voice. “Oh, visitors!”
“Why hello!” Aria said. “It’s been a while since we’ve dropped in for a visit.”
The rabbit gasped in surprise. “Aria!” he cried. “Fancy seeing you here! Oh, and is that Professor Mouzart?”“In person!” the mouse replied, bowing.
“And Tempo, Viola and Bugle! Oh it’s so good to see all of you! But, who are the new guys? I’ve never seen them before.”
“Well, I’m glad you asked!” Huck replied. “My name’s Huckleberry Hound, and this is my best friend, Snagglepuss!”
The mountain lion bowed. “Pleased to make your acquaintance, I’m sure! And whom might you be?”
“Call me Jack Bunny!” the rabbit sang, tapping his big feet and turning in a circle.
“Hey, your name sounds familiar!” Huck said. “Back in my world, there used to be an actor named Jack Benny!”
“In your world? You mean you’re not from the Land of Concerto?”
“Uh-uh. Snag and I came here through a giant horn in my room, well, a saxophone actually.”
“We’ve met so many friends along the way,” Snag added. “Huck and I are on a mission to save the Keepers of Music.”
“We’re like, collecting the pieces of the puzzle,” Tempo said.
“You mean the elements of music,” Viola pointed out. “So far we’ve found three of them.”
“And we’re gonna help Huck find the other ones!” Bugle said.
