His last words repeated in my head when Lolti came to got me. They spoke about something outside due to the look on her face. Nevermind that though, she pushed forward with a fancy smile and brought her hands together.
"Me and Beacon of Rebirth have spoke and have brought forth three choices, "she paused and held up three fingers, "You can stay at a room in the tower, or we can clean an outside house up for you to stay in, or we can safely transport you back to your colony." None of those sounded very appealing truthfully. I could just stay sitting in this room and be content. I knew she was expecting an answer but which sounded the best.
"If it's no trouble, an outside home would be just fine, "I didn't want to be thinking about my colony at the moment. Something new might be nice. It's been years since I've slept in a real house
Loltis smile brightened and she nodded,"perfectly fine, I'll notify them just- stay put." She turned on her heel and walked into the hallway. Through the open door I could see a hint of the other beacon.
Leaned there against the wall with the helm in hand and the other crapped against his abdomen. He appeared to be listening. I noticed markings, black rings wrapping around the tip of his ear. There were holes drilled into his horn, I could see these for the first time from the side. He hardly moved at all against the wall. It wasn't until Lolti was coming back that his head turned, his eyes met mine. His were so different from the other Khagveks.
"Alright, cleanup crew said there are a few empty houses currently, let's go get you settled,"Her cheery voice spoke through my fascination. I watched as he pushed off the wall and disappeared into the hallway. Only then could I focus on Lolti again, providing a nod to her. She beckoned me to follow, which I did. I saw no sight of the Beacon of Rebirth in the hallway anymore.
Lolti led me through the city, stopping by a few human stations. She got a few bags from them, I'm assuming to be full of supplies or clothes. Not that I needed much or anything at all. I could have nothing and be fine.
They're not like the Shakall, don't think like that.
We stopped at tables outside the stations, both human and Khagvek together handing out food. Lolti announced something to the Khagvek in their language and he handed over a small sized bag.I really don't need all of this...
There was a neighborhood sector, one for humans and one for Khagveks. Safety or comfort reasons I suppose. The human section was the one we were in currently. Each house looked nearly identical. At least the smaller ones, some were larger and had different layouts. Maybe those were family homes rather then the singe, that'd explain the size. We were walking along concrete paths, similar to the ones at our city. There's were singled out paths leading to each house. Outside some homes id see a person or two, conversating like normal. There were even some kids, a shocking sight for me. Kids have either been kept inside until they were mature enough to work, or they'd just be sent to work.
Some of them looked strangely... Pale. That was the nice word for it. They looked different. Bright eyes and narrow ears. Compared to their parents they looked almost like..
"Those kids, are they healthy?" I questioned the nicest way I could. Lolti lifted her head to look where I mentioned. A new smile grew on her face.
"Oh yes, they're very healthy. We were worried something might've happened during their birth, but luckily both parent and child are well," she answered, as if holding back on information. It nagged me.
"Why are they grey and so skinny," I butted finally, looking away from the kids. Lolti raised a hand to shelter a laugh. Why is she laughing?
"Their father is Khagvek, they're a mix between our species," she explained calmly, lowering her hand to carry a bag now. I was surprised. No, not a little. A lot surprised actually. These people trusted the aliens so much to get that close to them? Even after the Shakall they'd want that? Maybe this life is normal for them. I don't know how long they've been free. Lolti would know.
"Lolti," I began as we walked up to a house. Its lights off and the door barely open. She dropped the bags down by the door then turned to me, a strangely sympathetic look on her face. I continued,"How long have the people here been free from the Shakall?"
Lolti brought a hand up to scratch at her horn, I've been overlooking the fact she has those. Strangely so. She cocked her head to the side as she thought.
"Some have been here for all six years, other maybe four if they have kids. The more recent freed ones wanted to stay in their own colony, so we let them. This is just the first colony we helped so a lot feel safest here, "She reached into her pocket, pulling out a key. She held. it out for me to take, "we hope you'll feel safe here, too."
I took the keys from her grasp then hesitantly stepped to the door. It was already open so I guess these are if I wanted to leave again. I pocketed them then reached for the bags. The weight of them was nothing compared to the bags of soil ive carried before. I brought them inside, welcoming the less humid air against my skin.
It was a cozy layout, everything was really close together. A wall separated the kitchen from the living room, which connected to a bedroom and bathroom. I brought the bags to the kitchen and immediately searched every cabinet. There was a little amount of silverware, plates, bowls, among other items I could use. Though I can't even remember the last time I was in a kitchen, let alone cooked. I noticed there was also a cable phone strung up on the wall, I haven't seen one of those in ages too. I felt a quiet laugh emit from my mouth, things might actually be different here.
