(bennett's outfit for this part of the chapter)
The next day, after school, Bennett found himself pacing nervously around the living room, waiting for his mom to arrive. He was chewing on his nails, a nervous habit he picked up recently, as he glanced at the clock on the wall. She was ten minutes late. Was she standing them up? Was she even going to show? His dad was sitting on the couch, trying to read a book, but kept getting distracted by his son's pacing.
"Can you not do that? You're making me dizzy." Eric complained, his eyes flicking between his son and the pages of his book.
"Sorry, I can't help it. I'm nervous." Bennett admits, pausing to look at his father. "She's late." He furrows his eyebrows when he realized something. "That book is upside down."
Eric pauses, looking at the book he held and rolls his eyes, closing it and setting it on the coffee table. "I knew that." He scoffs. "But she's only late by ten minutes, Benny. Give her a break. She's probably just stuck in traffic."
"But you said the motel she's staying at is nearby. Wouldn't she just walk here?" Bennett mumbles, resuming pacing and biting his nails. "It would be faster." He was worried his mother had changed her mind or maybe decided that they weren't worth her time and left the city altogether. He wouldn't blame her, though. She wasn't required to be in their lives. Clearly, since she missed all eighteen years of his life. He had no idea what she was like, if she was a good person or a bad one. What if she was a drug dealer or an alcoholic or a serial killer? What if she was all three?!
Eric sighs and stands up, walking over to his son. He gently grabs Bennett's wrist, pulling his hand away from his mouth. "Stop biting your nails. And stop worrying. Everything is going to be fine."
"How are you so calm about this?" Bennett asks, frowning at him. "I'm freaking out, dad."
"I'm not calm. I'm super freaking out inside, but I'm trying to remain calm and stop myself from wanting to throw up." Eric admitted, chuckling a little.
Bennett gives him an incredulous look. "That makes me feel so much better, thanks."
"Well, it's the truth. I'm nervous, and I'm scared. I'm worried she's going to rip our hearts out and stomp all over them and do the." Eric confesses with a shrug. "Again." He adds with a sigh. He pauses before saying, "Wait, what was I saying?"
Bennett groans, pulling away from him. "You're so bad at pep talks, dad. Aren't you the mayor of a town or something? You should be good at speeches and stuff."
"I was the mayor of the great town called St. Upid." Eric proudly said as his son sent him a look. "It's a real place! And, I'll have you know, I was a very good mayor. The townspeople loved me. Now I'm a junior senator for New York."
"And you still don't know how to give a good pep talk." Bennett scoffed, shaking his head.
"You don't need a pep talk. You need a hug." Eric decided, pulling his son in for a hug.
