What We've Missed Without You

"Papa, what kind of job do you have?"

"I'm a trainer...I teach boxers how to fight."

"W-Wow, you must be super strong..." Hayato had sparkles in his velvet-pink eyes, giving the older man a large smile. "Y-You can protect Mama, right? A-And you can teach me how to protect Mama!"

Subaru paused, throat dry as he looked over at Yui; she was currently nursing a cup of chamomile tea, staring blankly into the steaming yellow liquid across from the two next to Karlheinz. He suggested that everyone could use a relaxing cup of tea while they all caught up, away from the crowd of vampires downstairs. It was honestly surprising how the other brothers didn't catch a whiff of Yui's blood, they probably thought it was just their heads messing with them. Subaru didn't blame them, he initially tried to ignore the sweet aromatic scent of her blood; it would be stupid if she was at this party, until his father suddenly dragged him out to the gardens to face his worst fear.

Even after twelve years, she was still beautiful.

This small life next to him, Hayato, reminded Subaru of himself when he was younger to the point where it hurts. He doesn't know that his father is a monster, he doesn't know all of the pain he caused for his mother; hell, he probably hasn't put together why Subaru wasn't in his life until now. Sure, he had no idea how old this kid was, but it doesn't take an scientist to figure out why someone's father wasn't in a child's life. Kids were smart enough to put two and two together, despite it hurting. Hayato smiled at Subaru, happily swinging his legs off the edge of his seat.

"Ne, Papa. Are you coming home with us? We can live like a family together! Chi-chan, Hana-chan, and Asa-chan can be happy that they have a Papa now! We can buy a house and live like a family!"

Yui was trembling, Subaru could see it. It was obvious whoever those kids Hayato was talking about were definitely not Subaru's kids, vampire biology decided to curse Yui's human body. God, how many kids did she have? That night was a ruthless orgy for her, she might have had a whole classroom full of kids just by herself. Subaru took in a silent breath before answering his son's question.

"I...Don't think your mom would want me around."

"Eh? Why not?" His velvet-pink eyes blinked curiously, tilting his head. Great, Subaru had to explain relationships to a kid he just met.

"Sometimes...Parents don't want to be together anymore."

"Oh...You and Mama aren't married anymore?"

"We never got married...We, uh...Stopped dating a while ago. I didn't know she had you." Subaru lied, a kid wasn't going to be able to understand the concept of rape. It was better for him if he learned a little bit later in his life, so he could understand how much of a monster his dad was. Karlheinz chuckled, setting his teacup down before speaking. "But you can always come and visit your father, Hayato. Grandpa would be happy to let you visit whenever you like! But it all depends on what your Mama thinks. It's perfectly normal for some children to live in two different houses to spend time with their parents! I'll have a room for you and you can decorate however you want."

"Wow...My own room..." Hayato was in awe, a whole room to himself instead of sharing one with all of his siblings? It was odd, since he was so used to sleeping in the same mattress with his mother. It sounded kind of scary, since he'd be all alone in his room...Not to mention, this place was super dark. Would his father let him sleep with him in the same bed? They just met, so it would be a bit rude of Hayato to do that. The six-year-old looked over at Yui, the awe slowly wiping off his face when he saw how still she was, a blank expression as she continued to stare into the tea that was losing its heat. Why did she look so sad? Eventually, the pale blonde snapped out of her daze and set her full cup of tea down on its saucer, forcing a smile on her face when she realized that Hayato was staring at her. "Hayato-kun...Do you want to start visiting your Papa here?"
