Giggle McDimples rides up ahead of us with Duke, keeping track of our ride. "Got a visual on the RV, heading southbound." The sound of the RV revving and harshly breaking is distant but evident. What have those toys done now? Like I always have through the years, I stay to the back of the group to make sure no one is left behind, but one doll in particular sways to a stop. I turn back to her and grab the sheriff's arm before he can get too far while keeping my eye on the curious doll.
"Gabby? Are you okay?" I question, approaching her and leaning over the balcony to figure out what's caught her eye. "Gabby?"
Down on the ground our eyes land on a sniffling little girl. She's in a corner of the carnival that's dimmed, and quiet and I know that Gabby knew something was immediately wrong. "I think she's lost." Gabby's eyebrows pull with worry and sympathy as we watch the girl cower back into the shadows eyeing the busy crowd.
"Are you sure?" Woody utters and by the look in her eye we know. Woody and I share a look of understanding as we redirect our sight to the very brave and noble decision making doll. This is her chance! "Change of plans."
We get ourselves back down to the grassy ground and stay hidden behind a stack of hay bales from one of the attractions. The soft cries of the girl fill the air as we prepare Gabby for her big moment.
"I'm so nervous." Gabby starts to overthink, frantically imagining every other thing possible "What if she doesn't like me?"
"Gabby." I speak up softly, trying to stop her panicking.
"I don't know if I can do this." She breathes heavily, it sort of reminds me of Jessie. I've calmed her down a few times, I can calm Gabby down too. Just putting your hand on her shoulder doesn't work, she needs to be talk through this.
"Stop, Gabby!" I catch her shaking hands in mine and hold them securely "It's just like you said. This is the most noble thing a toy can do." Her big, green eyes watch me carefully as I speak with her, shoulders softening and breathing returning to normal. "This is your true chance, to help a child."
Gabby Gabby is ready.
"Okay. Just edge yourself a bit into the light." Bo instructs to Gabby as we slowly drop hands for her to round the corner and shuffle along the hay bale. "Not too far. That's it." Gabby takes the tinniest step over with a deep breath in, dropping down to sit in toy mode. "Perfect."
My heart sits in my throat for her as I watch the fluffy plush toy pair roll a ball from the carnival game next door. The worn down ball catches the whimpering girls attention and leads her eye right to Gabby as it gently taps her foot.
The girls arms are tightly squeezed to her body, while taking a few steps to observe Gabby a little closer. She bends down and holds Gabby so gently in her grasp, with soft cries. "Are you lost too?" Oh poor thing, Gabby made the right choice, she's helping the right kid. I'm proud of her. Turning her around the girl pulls Gabby's pull string gently and her voice rings out perfectly.
