On the evening of October 31st in Wizard Village, Godrics Hollow, the darkest forbidden magic was dealt, taking the lives of two parents, Lily, and James Potter. The story of the night the Dark Lord struck and wiped out the family, leaving only one surviving member—Harry Potter—was heard around the world.
The full story was twisted and rewritten to conceal crucial information. Another family member, evidence of her existence completely wiped away, was kept secret to protect her from the future threats the Death Eaters may impose. No witch or wizard who was not there the night Harry was rescued knew of the girl's existence.
She was born on September 30th, making her just one month old on the day of the attack. James Potter was caught downstairs between his wife and Lord Voldemort. Acting quickly, he decided to sacrifice his own life to keep his daughter's life a secret. In a cupboard in the kitchen, he left the screaming child and quickly placed a charm upon it so her cries went unheard.
The charm James had placed wore off long after the Potters' demise, but she cried and cried until her throat was raw. She was found in the cupboard by Sirius Black and Rebeus Hagrid just after they had recovered her brother from upstairs.
The Dark Lord was defeated that night, and her brother became a legend. However, the sacrifices of Lily and James Potter were not forgotten. Their bravery and quick thinking saved their children's lives, succumbing to their own cruel fate in the process.
The Siblings were sent to live with their aunt and uncle, Petunia and Vernon Dursley, along with their son Dudley. From Lily's side of the family came Petunia. They were muggles, non-wizards, and Petunia held specific disdain for Lily and all wizardkind. Vernon hated them too, but he hated Harry most of all. Dudley fell victim to his parent's behavior and way of thinking, it got into him at an early age and he grew up to be an obnoxious spoiled brat, who loved nothing more than making the sibling's life a living hell.
The two never showed signs of magic throughout the next decade of living with the Dursleys. (That they were aware of, at least.) Petunia had never been happier. After Dudley, she had always wanted a daughter. One to dote on, to dress up like a doll, and teach baking and sewing to. With the magicless child, she got the normal daughter she always wanted. She prayed every day that she wouldn't turn out to be a 'freak' like her younger sister.
Unfortunately for Petunia, this dream did not live on for much longer.
In 1991, on Harry Potter's 11th birthday, her image of a perfect daughter was shattered, for she knew she would follow in her brother's footsteps not long after.
Harry began to attend Hogwarts, a school of witchcraft and wizardry, leaving his sister alone in the house, surrounded by people who now despised her, for one full year. But, she was happy for him, ecstatic even, that her brother could finally leave the place he'd been abused in for all his life. He could finally find happiness in such a wonderful place. And for that reason, she wasn't upset at his absence.
Harry spoke of his sister to his friends, and they spoke of her to their families, and eventually, the entirety of the Witches and Wizards around the globe knew of the girl's existence. Word about Harry Potter's secret sister spread rapidly throughout the Wizarding World, landing on the front page of every newspaper, and the topic of everyone's conversations. It was bound to happen eventually, but the news eventually fell into the hands of former and current Death Eaters. But she was safe where she was, from Death Eaters and wizard reporters hoping to snag some information for a good story to meet their deadlines.
Oblivious to the wizarding world raging over the news of her existence, she focused on reading Harry's letters each day for a year. Words of ink on tattered paper, sent by owl! His experiences, new friends, spells, classes, everything from day one to the last he wrote about to her. She was captivated by his stories, she cried reading them, she laughed, and she got scared thinking about the dangers and enemies he faced. She couldn't wait to experience the magic he wrote about. It entranced her, just by reading it!
Just how enchanting would it be to experience it in real life?
