Nick, Matt, and Chris decided that they wanted to visit West Texas for a little getaway, a vacation of sorts. The night before they left, Matt was doing some research about the area.
"Apparently, there's a lot of snakes there." Matt said to his brothers. "Oh well, it's not like we're going on a hike or anything." Chris said. "Damn right were not because fuck that. I hate hiking. And snakes." Nick added in a joking tone. "All right, I gotta go pack." Chris said and started walking towards his room. "Why aren't you already packed? I've been packed since Wednesday." Matt said. "Oh, the luggage police over here. Dude, it's Saturday. Who packs that early in advance?" Chris said but didn't wait around for the answer to his question.
Nick woke up before his alarm and started getting ready, even if it was 5 in the morning. When his alarm went off an hour later, he went to see if his brothers were awake. They weren't. "Wake up, Matt." Nick said, standing in Matt's doorway, and he turned on the light. "Wake up, Chris." Nick said but Chris' light is broken, so he just shined his phone flashlight in his eyes. Which earned him an angry "Fuck off."
They eventually all got ready and started heading to the airport for a really long flight. They boarded the plane at around 9 in the morning and took off at 10. It was a very uneventful flight and they basically just slept the whole way. When they got to Texas it was around 11 at night. So needless to say they wanted to get some real food.
They got an Uber to their hotel and were looking for places to eat while in the Uber. They made it to the hotel, checked in to their room and went to their room. They put their stuff in the hotel and took turns using the bathroom or showering.
It was now around 1 am. after they just relaxed for a while, and they were starving. They started talking about what to eat and not much was open so they decided to just go to the store and get something there. They got their shoes on and started heading out the door. They found a store relatively close to their hotel so they decided to just walk.
It was still a 20-minute walk, though. It was a nice night, the perfect temperature and not too humid or windy. They were all really enjoying this walk. They were now, around 4 minutes away from the store, but if they cut across this field, then they would be there. So they started walking across the field.
They were in the middle of this field, and it was completely pitch black outside, so they couldn't see anything, but they could see just enough to not need flashlights. "Ow holy fuck!" Nick shouted all of sudden and stumbled. "What?" Chris said and grabbed Nick's arm to hold him up. "I don't know, I guess a stick scratched me or something, damn that hurt." Nick said while rubbing his ankle. "You okay?" Matt asked "Yeah, let's just go." Nick said and they continued walking.
They walked into the store and Matt looked down at Nick's ankle. "Hey, you're bleeding." He said while pointing to Nick's ankle. There was a bench next to the door so Nick sat on it. Nick pulled his sleeve over his hand and wiped the blood away. "We can just pick up some bandaids here." He said, got up and started walking.
They had been at the store for around 30 minutes and Nick's ankle was really starting to hurt. They got to the check out and paid for everything. "Can we just get an Uber back?" Nick asked while grimacing from the pain in his ankle and shin. "We can't, we didn't bring enough money from the hotel. Is your ankle hurting?" Chris asked with a worried look on his face. "Only a little, I'll manage." Nick said but he was unsure.
They started walking and decided not to cross through the field this time which meant that the walk would only take that much longer. "Nicks limping really bad." Chris whispered to Matt from in front of Nick. "Yeah I know but he'll be fine, it's just a scratch." Matt responded but in the back of his mind he was thinking if maybe it wasn't just a scratch.
They were just about halfway to their hotel when Nick said something, "Guys, hold on. Can I sit for a minute?" Without getting a response he lowered himself to the ground. Pain written all over his face. "You sure it's just a scratch?" Matt asked while looking down at Nick. "I don't know man, I just assumed that because what else could it be? It's fine, let's just keep going. We're almost there." Nick said and slowly stood up while grunting from pain.
They were about 5 minutes away from the hotel, and Nick had been using Chris as a crutch for the last 3 minutes. "Just put your arm around me." Chris said, pulling Nick's arm around his shoulders to help him walk. "You really don't look good, man. Kinda pale." Matt said worriedly. "I'm okay." Nick said, kinda slurring his words.
The rest of the way there, Matt and Chris helped Nick walk and had a permanent worried look on their faces as Nick kept limping more and more. He even leaned his head on Chris' shoulder.
They finally got to the hotel room, and they gently sat Nick down on one of the beds. "Ahh holy shit." Nick said and laid down on the bed. "Can we do anything to help?" Chris asked. "No, I'm just gonna go to sleep. Do you guys mind sharing a bed so I can have this one to myself?" Nick said while falling asleep. "Yeah, of course, we can put a bandaid on it tomorrow." Chris said and started getting ready for bed, same with Matt.
They next morning, Matt woke up to the sound of hyperventilating. He looked over at Nick's bed and didn't see him. He looked over at Chris and saw him awake, also looking for Nick. They both got up and followed the sound of rapid breathing. They reached the bathroom and saw Nick leaning against the tub with one hand on his head and the other on his chest, with his elbow resting on his knee.
They were about to say something, but before they could, Nick leaned over the toilet and threw up. "What's going on, man?" Matt asked and walked over to Nick while Chris stood in the doorway. "I don't. Know. My ankle. Really hurts." Nick said in between gasping breaths. Chris walked over and rolled up Nick's pants a little to reveal his ankle.
"Holy shit. Get up right now. We are going to the hospital." Matt said and started lifting Nick. "What? Why?" Chris said. "I'm pretty sure he was bit by a snake. Help me get him up." Matt said, and Chris started helping Matt help Nick.
All of a sudden, Nick went limp in their hands, and they started panicking. "Matt, go call an ambulance." Chris said frantically, while lowering Nick gently to the ground. Matt went and grabbed his phone and shakily typed in 911. He gave all of their information to the lady, and she said to stay on the line, so he set the phone on the edge of the tub. "Is he breathing?" She asked. They didn't even need to check to know because his chest was heaving up and down. "Yes, way too fast." Matt said.
"Okay, the ambulance will be there in 3 minutes, just hold on." She said, "Come on, Nick, wake up, man." Chris said while slapping Nick's face. "You hear that, Nick? Those sirens are coming this way, and if you don't wake up, those strangers are gonna see you lying on the floor of a bathroom." Matt said, trying to get Nick to wake up, but he knew it wouldn't work.
They heard someone knock on the door, and Matt went and answered. They got Nick into the ambulance, and all drove off. Once at the hospital, Nick was rushed to a room, and Matt and Chris were stuck waiting for hours in the cold, empty waiting room. They got called to Nick's room, and the doctor explained the situation.
"Mr. Sturniolo was bitten by a water moccasin, and he is very lucky to have gone that long without medical attention and still be alive. He is gonna be okay, but he has to stay here for a couple more days for observation. If you'll excuse me." The doctor explained and hurried out of the room to help someone else.
"Well damn Nick, why didn't you say that it was hurting that bad?" Chris asked in an accusatory tone. "I'm sorry, man. I just thought I was being dramatic, and I've never been bitten by a snake before." Nick said tiredly. "Chris, go easy. It's not his fault, though he should have said something. It's not his fault." Matt said kindly.
"You're right. I'm sorry, Nick. I was just really scared. I'm really glad you're okay. Hey, do you think that we can finally eat that food we picked up when we get back to the hotel?" Chris asked and got no response. "Nick?" Matt asked. Nick had fallen asleep, mid-conversation. Matt and Chris chuckled at their brother and sat down next to him to wait for him to wake up.
