I apologize for the shortness of this chapter!! It's been hard to find times to write and update this story!
When Katara finally got to her temporary room, she slept. She slept for hours, up until late that night. In fact, she wanted to sleep more, had she not been so well-rested. It wasn't hard sleeping on those grand Fire Nation beds, which were elaborately made with luxurious, silky sheets. Sheets that were smoother than anything else she'd experienced. The mattress was also quite adaptive to whichever sleeping position preferred in the moment. Very comfortable sleep, she noted. In all honesty, it was probably the best sleep she'd gotten in the past year.
Noting the moon, which had risen to the center of the sky during her slumber, Katara inferred it was late. She also assumed she'd missed dinner, considering that the Fire Nation rises with the sun; not the moon.
With all of her newly-replenished energy, the waterbender decided to step out onto her balcony and bask in the moon's light.
It made her feel powerful, more powerful than ever. The moon always made her feel energetic, and, well, hyperactive. It was as if her senses were 10x better.
Oh, and bold, she thought to add. Definitely more bold.
With her abilities, now with their monthly strength booster, a full moon, Katara decided to play with her bending a bit.
In a wave-like movement, twirling her fingers, Katara pulled some of the humidity from the air. Her sharpened senses sensed the pond water nearby, she figured it was coming from a pond in the courtyard below her. She condensed even more humidity into water droplets, and used the water as an extension of her arms. With her water-arms, Katara lowered herself towards the ground.
The courtyard looked unused and unkept, at least it did now. The girl figured that the Fire Lord wouldn't mind.
In one swift movement, the water from Katara's arms was now in the pond in front of her.
She didn't really have anything to train for, so she used the unusual free time to practice a traditional Southern Water Tribe dance; a water bending one. The elegant dancer copied the movements she once saw in a scroll her grandmother had, manipulating the water around her.
In truth, Katara loved being awake during the dark. It was rare for anyone else to be awake at such late hours, and she enjoyed the peace. It was like a fresh wave washing over all of her stress and worries from the day; they were now gone, and her mind was like a fresh slate. Eventually, during their travels, Zuko would join her for those late-night conversations. They reflected together and shared their thoughts, the ones they wouldn't share with anyone else.
It was captivating, enchanting, truly, it was. At least to Zuko.
The courtyard that the two were now in was once his mother's, so naturally, he came here looking for answers; just like he did in his youth. He came here when he needed to clear his head, have a break from the constant stress-induced migraines.
He came here looking for answers, and he found Katara.
She was so focused in her representation that Katara didn't notice Zuko admiring her, she didn't notice until he said something.
"The dance is beautiful," he said, hoping that's what the form was, not wanting to offend her or her culture.
Startled, Katara jumped a little; when did he join her outside?
She turned to see the face that matched that voice. Zuko.
She couldn't help but smile when his warm, golden eyes met hers.
"Thank you, Zuko."
The Fire Lord started to shift his weight from foot to foot, fidgeting with his fingers. She chuckled lightly, enjoying every bit of awkward Zuko. It was a rare view, considering how calm and collected he looked when speaking to his subjects and sages. "Something you wanna say?" Katara teased. "Well.. yes.. Katara, would you.. Would you spar with me sometime?" Zuko awkwardly rubbed the back of his head.
All of his anxiousness faded when she nodded. He let out a breath of relief.
With all of her water now back in the pond, Katara decided she'd better get back to her room soon. She remembered that her friend's energy source was not the moon; unlike her. He should get all the sleep he can get, anyways. Being the ruler of a.. Strong-willed nation must be very stressful and tiring. Especially if he called her here to help him. Katara's curiosity was overwhelming, but asking Zuko exactly what she's here for was a discussion for tomorrow.
Katara figured she must say goodnight to Zuko somehow.
The waterbender felt her cheeks flush as she ran up to Zuko. Standing on the tips of her toes, Katara pressed a kiss to Zuko's cheek, holding his scarred one with her hand. "Goodnight," she smiled.
"Goodnight," He breathed, feeling his heartbeat escalate. Zuko smiled as he reached up to where she had just kissed.
