Jin p.o.v
I opened the main door and leaned out my head, turning it alongside the empty corridor.
Our unit was the third one down the aisle, starting from the elevator. It stood on the left side and there were two more units in a zig-zag pattern, to be passed along on the way to the fire exit at the corner. Which made a total of five units.
The corridor only had a single CCTV camera. It was set facing the elevator door to recognize the people entering through. The lift only allowed travelling unit holders with key cards and if you're to bring any outsider a temporary key card was provided at the ground level security cabin.
Now the fire exit had cameras around every single corner to cover the entire stairway. There was no way I could outgo them. The only thing I could do was to hope that the camera-guy downstairs wouldn't notice.
Then again, I knew all my neighbours. They were quite different from each other but shared a one damn habit among themselves. Being nosy.
And I had to be extra careful on that.
I closed the door and took some deep breaths.
One, two, three.
I walked back over to the sleeping bag which laid below my bedroom door. I stood by it, thinking for a while. I checked my watch and saw it was almost 10.20 in the night. And I remembered something brilliant. The camera-guy's routine. I knew every step, exact time.
At 10.30 he's out for coffee with his fat security dude. So I had to wait 10 more minutes. I'll be fine for almost 20 minutes after he leave and it's more than enough for me to get the corpse downstairs.
I texted Jungkook to stand by at 10.30 by the stairway with the engine running and trunk manoeuvred toward the base. He sent me a thumbs up.
I checked my watch. seven minutes to go.
Six minutes to go.
Five.
Four.
I stepped near to the sleeping bag and got a good hold on the leg area. I knew it'd be difficult to handle the corpse by head or neck cuz the upper body's made to be much heavier comparing to the lower. I dragged the bag along the wooden floor towards the main door and dropped it there, panting a little. Gonna be a hell of a job to carry it down four flights of stairs.
I waited till 10.32. Gave it extra two minutes.
Then I slowly opened the door. Peeked out to see if anyone's roaming on the corridor. Saw nothing.
I quickly grabbed Taehyung's feet back and slid him out of the doorway into the corridor. Closed the door as quiet as I can. Then I swung his legs around and started dragging his body across the carpet towards the fire exit door. I passed two units. One more to go.
That's when I heard the elevator's bell ding behind me.
I panicked. Panicked hard.
I had to give it a go.
I put my maximum effort into the hands and yanked the corpse past the next door. Bent down and gave it a long hard push. The body rolled over like a cement statue, hit the swing doors of the fire exit hard and plopped out onto the third step of the stairway. I slipped through the closing panes in time to stop the body from falling all the way down.
I felt my heartbeat loud and clear in my ears. I was scared as hell.
I took three deep breaths and started rolling the dead body down the stairs with great care. I saw the red infrared light on the camera pointing right down at us over the corner. But there's no time to frat over such things.
It took me fifteen minutes to get the corpse downstairs. Jungkook's rented Lexus was already idling at the base, waiting for leap. He popped open the trunk and I heaved Taehyung into it, feet first. I shut the trunk door and ran for the passenger seat. As soon as I closed the door, Jungkook took his foot off the break and the vehicle accelerated through the parking lot. The car swiped off the ramp and joined the main road. It blended with the others and set into an average speed.
"What now?" Jungkook mumbled, beads of sweat visible on his forehead.
I looked at his hands and saw he was wearing a pair of latex gloves.
Smart boy I thought.
I took a credit card from my back pocket. Taehyung's American Express.
"We leave no paper trails."
Jungkook took a swift glance at it. "What do you mean?"
"I'll have to use this to buy us two plain tickets to Malpensa. They won't accept cash."
"Why are we going to Italy?"
"Like I said. To reduce our paper trails."
"How?"
"We'll fly to Malpensa first and stay there for a couple of days. Just to make sure they won't find the corpse. Then we'll head for Toronto and from there we could get a bus to Nova Scotia."
"What're you going to do with the corpse? Burn it?"
I shook my head. "Bad idea. We're in Seoul, the capital city of South Korea. Someone would immediately notice the smoke and call the police in. They'd be after our tails even before we could get on the damn plane."
"Then what're are you gonna do?"
"I'm gonna park this thing nice and slow. And just leave it there."
"But won't they find out?"
"Maybe. But not very soon. Cuz we're gonna use the airport's long-term parking area. People leave their vehicles in there for weeks. Or months. No one's gonna suspect our Lexus being there as long as someone would notice insects spilling out of the trunk. And that's not gonna happen anytime soon."
Jungkook made a face. "What about the fingerprints? I'm sure we couldn't wipe every single one of them off."
"That's a bit of a problem. But even if they find out the fingerprints- which would also take a long time to, because they'd have to find the corpse first- they ain't gonna read much from them. Maybe they recognize Taehyung from their criminal records cuz he's been fingerprinted almost hundred times but not us. They might have to trace mine back to my office to figure something out."
"What if the cleaners search your apartment? They're gonna spot the blood stains all over your room?"
"You don't have to worry about that either. Cleaners are usually pretty lazy. They won't try to break a sweat over fixing a broken lock on someone's bedroom door."
Jungkook looked at me with huge surprised eyes. "You broke your own bedroom lock?"
I nodded. "And I sliced the key too. Just in case."
"What about the gun?"
"I'm gonna leave the gun in the glovebox. All shiny in glass cleaner. But I'll dump the magazine and spent shells somewhere separately in case they'd tie the gun with the bullets and push Namjoon into trouble. I can't let that happen."
"What about our phones?"
"We'll leave them at the cafeteria by mistake. No need to throw them in trash. It's gonna wake up suspicion. Better to let some random man pick them up and reset the systems. That way we'll wipe out our existence from Seoul."
Jungkook went quiet for a moment. Then he asked, "What will happen when they finally find out the corpse? I mean, sooner or later someone's gonna notice Taehyung's gone and they'd run a search for it. Right?"
"They will, probably. But Kim Taehyung is classified as a drug addicted thief in the 'National Crime Database'. So no one would be excited in sticking up Red Notices for the killer, whoever it might be. They'd probably assume it was revenge from another maniac just like him."
"One last question."
"Yes Jungkookie?"
"How did you come up with this whole plan?"
I smiled at him. A tired smile. "Disgusting Army stories."
