The Past (15 years ago)

Whole room was shining with rays of the sun, which were coming through the windows. Near a window she was sitting on the chair and combing her daughter’s long hair, who sat on the floor. After tying them in a braid, she secured it with a ribbon.

Suddenly the door of the room opened and someone came inside. While putting the stuff in her hands on the bed she turned to the mother-daughter duo.

“Nayana, your clothes and jewelry for tonight are here…. Get ready on time”, that woman instructed her. “Hmm”, she hummed in her reply. That woman left after giving a glance at the little girl.

Seeing her departure, Tara immediately got up from the floor and ran towards the jewelry and clothes, which are for her mother. “Maa can I wear it for once. You never let me touch these…. I always see Roshni tying these around the anklets. It's sound is so pleasant”, little Tara exclaimed while holding her mother's ghunghroo.

On hearing her, Nayana's face became stern. Anger and fear of losing her precious is evident on her face. She walked towards her and grabbed her ghungroos from her hand with a jerk. Her action was so sudden that it left some scratches on the palm of her daughter's delicate skin.

“How many times I have explained to you ….this is not for you. Why can't you understand?”Nayana scolded her eight year old daughter so loudly which brought tears to her eyes. Her words got stuck in her mouth, she wanted to ask lots of questions but words were not coming from her mouth.

Tara lowered her gaze and stood in front of her mother while her head hung low. Seeing her daughter Nayana heart burnt, she sat on her knee to match her height.

“Don’t cry… calm down”, Nayana consoled her while wiping her tears. “Now go and do your school work”.

“Maa I-I don't want to go school”, said Tara nervously while looking down at the floor. The soft expression on Nayana's face became hard. She held her daughter’s shoulder tightly. “Why”, her tone was calm but only that little girl knew how dangerous it was.

“I have asked you something Tara. Why do you not want to go school?”, Nayana asked again. But words froze in Tara's mouth. She hugged her mother tightly and cried, “ I have no friends there. No one talks to me. Even teacher's looked at me with disgust. No one wants to be with me, they always bully me….Am I…Am I dirty maa?”Tara said and tightened her hold on her mother.

Nayana too hugged her tightly and creased her hair. Her heart pierced through their daughter's words. She wiped her tears from the corner of her eyes before breaking the hug.
