His first memories were of putting on a headset. He had other memories from before that, but that was so long ago. Now they were all distant and fuzzy. Those memories were so far away that he could barely remember them. They no longer brushed against his mind or even felt like his.
It had been so long. The only parts of his life before the circus were only glimpses and little flashes of fleeting memories brought back by the dark. For the most part, now the start of his past was that day he put on that headset. And from there, everything else burst to life.

Suddenly, he found himself in a strange and colorful place. It looked like a cross between a video game and a child's toy chest. Not only had his surroundings changed, but he did too. Now he looked like a walking, talking king chess piece and wore a long purple robe.
He was met with what looked like a circus ringleader, except instead of a head he just had floating teeth with eyes resting on his tongue. He could not tell whether it looked creepy or just goofy.
"Welcome to The Amazing Digital Circus!" The ringleader said with a goofy voice. "I'm Caine, the ringleader and guide for all the wacky adventures you'll have here!"
"Where am I?" Kinger asked.
Caine chuckled. "Why, I just told you!" He gave no other context than that.
"What are you?" Kinger decided to ask a different question.
"Looks like someone wasn't paying attention. I'm the ringleader around here." Caine said. "Now the question is, who are you?"
"I'm..." He stopped. "Actually, I don't remember my name."
"Of course you don't!" Caine laughed. "No human does when they enter the Digital Circus. So, now you can come up with a new one!"
He thought for a moment. "Well, I look like a king piece. I guess you could call me Kinger."
"Well then, welcome to The Amazing Digital Circus, Kinger!" Caine said.
"Oh, uh, thanks." Kinger glanced around, noticing the absence of anyone else. "Um, where is everyone?"
"You're the first one to arrive." Caine said. "But don't worry. I'm sure more friends will show up soon. Until then, how about I show you around!"
"Well, alright then."
Caine grabbed onto Kinger and sped off on a tour of the grounds. He moved so fast that Kinger barely had any time to process any of it.
"So now you know where everything is!" Caine said after bringing him back to the tent.
"Uh, sorta." Kinger said, "You might want to go a little slower with the tour, give people time to process everything."
"Well noted!" Caine said, pulling a notepad out of nowhere and jotting something down. Whatever he was writing, it definitely didn't look like notes. "I will keep that in mind for the future!"
The notepad disappeared when he was done and a giant bubble suddenly came out of his top hat. Its shiny black eyes stared at Kinger as it gave him a wide, toothy grin.
"Our first human, oh boy!" The bubble said.
"Now, Bubble, don't scare him off!" Caine warned.
"Um, what is that?" Kinger asked Caine.
"This is Bubble." Caine said. That was his only explanation. "Now, Bubble, why don't we prepare a feast to celebrate the new and first arrival!"
"I'm actually not that hungry, strangely." Kinger said.
"That's not surprising." Caine said, "You don't need to eat in the Digital Circus."
"Then why have a feast?" Kinger asked.
"To celebrate your arrival!" Caine said before turning to Bubble, "Why don't you go ahead and get it started."
"On it." Bubble said and floated away.
"Now, how would you like to see your room?" Caine asked.
"My room? Uh, sure."
Caine led Kinger to a corridor lined with doors that had pictures of wooden lay figures on them. They stopped next to the only door with a picture that was different from all the others. This one had a picture of him- or his avatar.
"This is where you'll be staying from now on." Caine told him.
Kinger opened the door and stepped inside the room. It was a decent size with checkered floors and pillows everywhere. "I can make this work." He said to himself as Caine was already gone.
Picking up the pillows one by one, he created a little fort and sat down inside it. He sat there for several minutes before Caine's last words echoed through his mind. "Wait, did he say "from now on"?"
