CHAPTER12: VENOMOUS ENCOUNTER (2)

(A/N): This is gonna be a very short chapter because I didn't have time to write this week, but to make it up to you guys the next one will be released next week Monday and will definitely be between 3000-4000 words.

Zephyrs allotted time had slipped away resulting in the system transporting him back to the camp. The sky painted itself with the soft hues of the rising sun, its warm embrace ignited the dawn, stirring the camp to camp to come alive. Amid the awakening, Nikko and Maya rose from their nights rest. Nikko, her eyes still heavy with sleep managed to summon a cheerful greeting.

"Good morning, Maya." Her tone reflecting the remnants of the optimistic nature she once had.

Maya, however, struggled to shake of the weight of the sleep gave a languid response.

"Huh? Oh yeah, morning." The drowsiness clung to her like a shadow.

Together, they emerged from their tents, drawn toward Zephyr's resting place, driven by an instinct that something was amiss. But the sight that greeted them was a nightmare they could never have anticipated. Zephyr lay there, his body was now a canvas tainted with the eerie crawl of red veins. One prominent stream of crimson ran like a sinister river, connecting his left calf to his chest, marking the path of an insidious poison.

Without a second thought both screamed as high as the sound barrier would allow, urgently signaling for medical attention to come to his aid. But alas the camp was ill prepared for such an event, medical practitioners were scarce and only a suffocating crowd came their way.

"MOVE AWAY NOW!!!" Nikko's voice rang out, transformed by desperation her once gentle demeanor now standing guard over the unconscious warrior.

Maya, being driven by a sense of urgency, tore a fragment of Zephyrs' clothing which for reasons unknown to her was already ragged. She wound it tightly around the source of the venom in his calf, creating a makeshift tourniquet. This though was only able to slow down the spread of the creeping toxin.

His pale skin bore marks of his struggle, his breaths shallow and labored. The venoms inexorable march showed no sign of halting, and as it seeped deeper his breath further weakened.

Nikko, her gaze flickering between Zephyr's weakening form and the crowd that seemed to offer nothing but suffocating barriers, felt a rising tide of anguish within her. She had already lost so much, and now she was forced to confront the very real possibility of losing Zephyr too- one of the only people she had left in this forsaken world.

Maya frantically tried her best to halt the venom, praying in her heart that she succeeds. But the crimson tendrils advanced, devouring Zephyrs chest in a relentless grip and further increasing the likelihood of his death. She panicked, going into a state of desperation at the sight of his struggle for breath.

Then it happened. The venom had reached his beating heart, stopping it in its tracks and consuming every inch of exposed skin surrounding it. Maya then stopped; the previously noisy crowd now exuded a deafening silence. This gloomy quietness was only broken by a soft pattering of water droplets that began to fall. But these were not drops from the sky; they were in fact the tears of Maya. She tried her best to hold in the grief but succumbed to the ocean of grief that cascaded down her face.

Nikko's gaze turned to the lifeless figure before her. Her heart fractured, a painful understanding blossoming within her and with that came a horrifying realization which dawned upon the girl. Zephyr, her closest friend, someone who's as dear to her as a brother had just left her, only a few days after Arvins death, this in itself was a burden too great for her young soul to bare.
