The One That Got Away | Kataang

Chapter 1- He's back

Just wanted to clarify that I'm not a native English Speaker, so please forgive me for any mistakes, I'm doing my best.

Katara couldn't believe what she saw. She can't believe that the one who used to be her rock came back. She never thought that he would. She moved on with her life, she dated a wonderful guy named Tai, an earthbender from where she is been living since the 100-year war ended, Omashu. Seeing him again, made her feel a pinch in her heart, she couldn't believe that the one who shattered her heart, was now standing in front of her. 

He grew up quite a lot since the last time she saw him. It's been 3 years to be exact, 3 years of being alone, without her best friend. And here he is, standing right there with his goofy and adorable smile.

~Flashback~

3 years ago, Aang-15, Katara-17

It was another beautiful sunny day in Omashu. Aang and Katara were at Bumi's palace on a meeting, when suddenly a messenger from Ba Sing Se came running into the throne room. "Avatar!" the messenger called while panting. "Stormes! Tsunamis! Everywhere!" he said still not catching up his breath.

Aang approached him, letting him sit so he could explain what was happening. "Avatar, there are Storms and tsunamis everywhere in the earth kingdom, even in places that are not located near a water source, please avatar we need your help, something is happening...Arashi is happening" the messenger said. Aang knew that he must go with him, he didn't know who or what Arashi was, but he knew that it was something serious. Katara looked at Aang, worried, something was wrong and as the avatar, Aang can't just ignore this.

Two hours have passed and Aang is done packing his things, standing with Katara at the palace gardens near Appa. "Aang please let me come, I can help" Katara begged, afraid to let him go by himself. Aang looked into her beautiful blue eyes, smiled, and took her hand in his hand "Katara we've talked about this already, I need you here. There are a lot of problems in the world, and I can't deal with all of them at the same time. I need you here to help me, keep doing what we were doing, while I'm away. I trust you" he kissed the palm of her hand and pulled her into a tight hug.

Katara relaxed in his arms. She knew that he was right, she knew that the safety and the balance of the world must come first and then anything else. "Just promise me one thing" she said after a while, still holding on to him, taking a deep breath and looking straight into his loving eyes. "Anything" he replied not breaking their eye contact. "Come back to me. I know that you don't know how much time it would take to defeat this Arashi thing, but please when you're done, come back to me" Tears formed in her eyes, and her voice was shaking. "I'll always be back to you, my love. Maybe I'm the savior of the world, but you my love, you're the savior of me" he kissed her, a soft and loving kiss, showing her all his emotions towards her. With that, he airbended himself onto Appa's head, looked at her one last time, and flew away.

~End of flashback~

"Aang" she whispered shocked and angry at the same time. How could he smile knowing what he had done to her...knowing that he abandoned her like that?

"Hi Katara" he said taking a step towards her, hoping to get a hug. He missed her a lot, and now seeing her as beautiful as always, he was excited. She immediately took a step back, not wanting him to touch her, she was furious. How could he act like nothing happened?! A crack in his heart could be heard from a distance once she backed away.

He didn't understand why she did it. "Why are you here?" She asked him almost without emotion. She was too stunned. "What?" he mumbled, not knowing why she acted like that. She could see a tear in his beautiful grey eyes, making her almost feel sorry for him. Just almost. "You've been out of my life for almost 3 years, for spirit's sake, so why coming back now?! I've moved on. I'm in a relationship and I'm happy and in love, so why coming back?!" She said with an angry voice that cracked at the last part of her sentence. Now she was tearing up, looking straight into his eyes, seeing how offended he was, how shocked, and how he was about to faint.

Maybe she was wrong to say that to him that way she thought to herself. No, she wasn't, she knows that she is right. "I finally defeated Arashi...and...and Bumi...Bumi is dying" he said almost whispering. Now was her turn to be in shock, not only because of the news about Arashi, which she was sure that he defeated a long time ago, well she was sure until now. She was shocked because of the news about Bumi. She saw how sad he was...she knew that Bumi was more than a friend to him, he was all that was left of his life before being trapped in the iceberg.

"I came back to you as I promised. I came back to see him one last time, hoping that you, my girlfriend would be there for me. My girlfriend, that was on my mind with every breath I took, because you and I never really broke up. The opposite, I thought that my love would be waiting for me as I waited for her ever since I left to fight Arashi, the greatest threat to the world since Ozai..." he said opening his glider while crying. How could she do this to him? While he was waiting for her, fighting to keep the world safe for her, she was with another. She broke him, the only one that he had in the world, the one that he trusted the most, betrayed him.

He was about to leave when she spoke. "Aang...wait" Katara said. Not wanting to let him leave like this. She needed to explain to him. Now she felt guilty. How could she be so self-centered?! "No Katara...have fun with your beloved boyfriend...I have a friend to visit and a limited time to do it" he said, flying away from her once more.
