Chapter Six:
The Gathering Storm

Yumi POV

Kyoto was beautiful in the autumn.

The leaves had turned brilliant shades of crimson and gold, carpeting the grounds of the Kyoto Jujutsu High in a tapestry of warmth. The air was crisp and cool, carrying the faint scent of incense and aged wood. It was the kind of setting that should have been peaceful, serene-but I knew better.

The Sister School Exchange Event was anything but peaceful.

I stood at the edge of the training ground, my hands clasped behind my back, my posture immaculate. The five students were gathered behind me-Megumi, Kugisaki, Panda, Toge, and Maki. They were a formidable group, each one carrying their own strength and their own scars. But there was an emptiness among them, a gap that no one spoke about.

They still thought Yuji was dead.

I felt the weight of that secret pressing down on me, a constant reminder of the lies we were forced to tell. But I pushed the feeling aside, focusing on the present. There was no room for weakness here. Not today.

The Kyoto students arrived in a wave of energy, their presence immediately shifting the atmosphere. I recognized them all-the prodigies, the outcasts, the ones who had clawed their way to the top through sheer determination and talent.

Mai Zenin walked at the front, her expression sharp and disdainful. Behind her came the others-Miwa, with her nervous energy and earnest determination; Mechamaru, his puppet body a stark contrast to the human sorcerers around him; and the rest, a collection of personalities that clashed and complemented in equal measure.

And then there was Todo Aoi.

I felt his gaze on me before I saw him. His eyes locked onto mine, a familiar intensity burning within them. He was tall, muscular, his presence commanding. And he was looking at me like I was the answer to a question he'd been asking his entire life.

Here we go again.

"Takahashi-san!" Todo's voice boomed across the training ground, drawing the attention of everyone present. "You look as stunning as ever. Have you reconsidered my offer? A partnership between us would be legendary."

I maintained my composure, my expression carefully neutral. "Todo-san. Still the same, I see."

He grinned, completely undeterred by my lack of enthusiasm. "You are my ideal type, Takahashi-san. Tall. Fierce. Badass. And those curves-" He made an appreciative gesture that made Kugisaki snort behind me. "A woman like you deserves a man who can match her strength."

"Flattered," I said flatly. "But I'm not interested."

He laughed, the sound booming across the training ground. "That's what I love about you! The chase makes it more exciting!"

I shook my head, turning my attention to the Kyoto teachers who were approaching. Mei Mei was first, her blue hair gleaming in the sunlight, a predatory smile on her lips. Utahime followed close behind, her expression a mixture of exasperation and barely concealed annoyance.

"Takahashi," Mei Mei said, her voice smooth as silk. "It's been a while. I see you're still teaching the children."

"Mei Mei." I inclined my head, refusing to take the bait. "I see you're still collecting your payment before the job is done."

Her smile sharpened. "A woman has to look out for herself. You wouldn't understand-you've never had to worry about money."

"Maybe not," I said coolly. "But I've never had to worry about loyalty, either."
