Chapter Eight:
The Darkness Unleashed
Third Person POV
The barrier shimmered between them, an unyielding wall of cursed energy that mocked their every attempt to breach it. Yumi stood at its edge, her green eyes blazing with frustration, her hands clenched into fists at her sides.
"We need to get in there," she said, her voice sharp. "Now."
Satoru studied the barrier, his expression unreadable behind his blindfold. "I've been trying to find a weakness. There isn't one. At least, not one that's obvious."
"Then we make our own weakness," Yumi said, her gaze shifting to the sky. "Go up. Get a bird's eye view. See if you can spot anything from above-an opening, a gap, anything."
Satoru looked at her, his head tilted. "And what will you do?"
She turned to face him, her eyes hard and determined. "I'll find another way in. I always do."
"You're going to try to brute force your way through, aren't you?"
"I'm going to do whatever it takes."
He studied her for a long moment, searching for something in her expression. Then he nodded, a small smile playing on his lips. "Don't do anything reckless, Yumi."
"You're one to talk."
He laughed, the sound warm despite the tension. "Point taken." He stepped back, his cursed energy flaring around him. "I'll be back soon. Don't have too much fun without me."
"Just go," she said, shaking her head.
He launched himself into the sky, his white hair disappearing into the clouds above. Yumi watched him go, her heart pounding in her chest. Then she turned back to the barrier, her expression hardening.
Alright. Let's see what you're made of.
She reached out, her fingers pressing against the barrier's surface. It was cold beneath her touch, pulsing with a rhythm that was almost... alive. She pushed, her cursed energy surging against it, but the barrier held firm.
"Come on," she muttered, pressing harder. "Let me in."
Nothing.
The rage built inside her, hot and consuming. She thought of the students trapped on the other side. Yuji, who had already died once. Megumi, who had watched his friend's heart get ripped out. Kugisaki, who had been grieving for weeks. They were in there, fighting for their lives, and she couldn't reach them.
I will not let them die. Not again. Not ever.
The darkness within her stirred, rising to meet her anger. It coiled around her heart, cold and familiar, a power she had spent years learning to control. But control was the last thing on her mind right now.
She raised her hand, shadows gathering at her fingertips. "You want to keep me out?" she said, her voice low. "Fine. I'll just have to make my own entrance."
She plunged her hand into the barrier, the shadows wrapping around her arm like armor. The barrier shuddered, cracks forming where the darkness touched. She pushed deeper, the shadows feeding on the barrier's energy, consuming it from the inside out.
"Break," she commanded, her voice resonating with power.
The barrier screamed-a high-pitched wail that echoed across the training ground-and then it shattered. A hole tore open in the barrier's surface, jagged and raw, dark energy spilling out like smoke.
Yumi pulled her hand back, her breath coming in sharp gasps. She had done it. She had broken through.
Without hesitation, she stepped through the opening and into the chaos beyond.
