Chapter Twelve:
The Lion's Den
Yumi POV
The Takahashi estate loomed before us, ancient and imposing, carved into the mountainside like a secret that had been kept for centuries. Torchlight flickered against the stone walls, casting dancing shadows that seemed to move with a life of their own. The air was cool and damp, carrying the faint scent of incense and aged wood.
I walked beside Satoru, our bags slung over our shoulders, our footsteps echoing against the cobblestone path. He had traded his blindfold for a pair of dark glasses, his blue eyes hidden but his presence no less overwhelming. His white hair caught the torchlight, bright and ethereal, making him look like something out of a legend.
The passersby stopped and stared.
I could feel their eyes on us—on him. The strongest sorcerer in the world, walking through the Takahashi estate like he owned it. Some of them looked awestruck, their mouths slightly open, their gazes fixed on his face. Others looked terrified, their bodies tensing as if they expected him to attack at any moment.
And then there were the whispers.
"That's Gojo Satoru... what is he doing here?"
"Is he with the young mistress?"
"They say he's the strongest... but why would he come here?"
I kept my expression neutral, my gaze fixed ahead. Let them whisper. Let them wonder. I had more important things to worry about.
My room was exactly as I'd left it—sparse, functional, a place to sleep rather than a home. The walls were bare, the furniture simple. It was a room that reflected my relationship with this place: practical, distant, and devoid of warmth.
I dropped my bag on the bed, turning to face Satoru. "Your room is just beside mine. You can freshen up there. I'll go meet my parents."
He raised an eyebrow, his glasses sliding down his nose slightly. "Are you sure you don't want me to come with you?"
"I'm sure." I met his gaze, my voice firm. "I need to do this alone. At least for now."
He studied me for a moment, searching for something in my expression. Then he nodded, a small smile playing on his lips. "Alright. But if you need me, I'll be right next door."
I nodded, turning away before I could change my mind.
The main hall was grand and suffocating.
My mother sat at the head of the table, her posture perfect, her green eyes sharp and unyielding. The Takahashi crest was embroidered on her kimono, a symbol of the power she wielded. She looked every inch the matriarch—cold, calculating, and utterly untouchable.
But she wasn't alone.
Four elders sat around the table, their ancient faces creased with wrinkles, their eyes filled with the kind of arrogance that came from decades of unearned authority. They were old, irrelevant, and utterly convinced of their own importance.
I walked to the center of the room, my hands crossed over my chest, my chin lifted. I didn't bow. I didn't show respect. They hadn't earned it.
"Yumi," my mother said, her voice cool and measured. "You're late."
"I'm here," I replied, my tone equally flat. "That's what matters."
The elders exchanged glances, their disapproval palpable. One of them—a gaunt man with a withered face—cleared his throat.
"You show disrespect to your elders," he said, his voice like gravel. "Your mother has given you everything. Your position, your training, your—"
"My position," I interrupted, my voice sharp, "was earned through my own strength. My training was a necessity, not a gift. And everything else?" I laughed, the sound hollow. "Everything else came with conditions. Strings attached. Expectations I never asked for."
