Chapter Nine: Aftermath
Yumi POV
The ceiling was white.
That was the first thing I noticed when I opened my eyes—a stark, sterile white that made my head throb. The second thing I noticed was the ache in my body, a deep, bone-weary exhaustion that seemed to seep into every fiber of my being.
I blinked, trying to piece together where I was. The room was small, the walls lined with medical equipment. The faint scent of antiseptic hung in the air, mixing with something else—cigarette smoke, maybe, or the lingering trace of cursed energy.
The infirmary. I was in the infirmary.
I tried to sit up, but my body protested. A sharp pain lanced through my side, and I let out a hiss of breath, collapsing back against the pillow.
"Don't move."
I turned my head, my eyes landing on the familiar figure standing in the corner. Shoko Ieiri was leaning against the wall, a cigarette dangling from her lips, her expression a mixture of irritation and relief.
"Shoko," I said, my voice hoarse. "How long was I out?"
"About an hour," she replied, pushing off from the wall and walking toward me. "You collapsed, passed out, and scared the hell out of everyone. Including me. Including Gojo. I thought you were going to die, Yumi. Your cursed energy was completely depleted."
I winced, the memory of the battle flooding back. The domain. The curse. The way my darkness had consumed everything in its path.
"I'm fine," I said, though the words felt hollow even to my ears.
Shoko raised an eyebrow, clearly unconvinced. "Fine? You used a domain expansion that fed on nature energy. That's not fine. That's reckless. That's—" She stopped, shaking her head. "What were you thinking?"
"I was thinking about the students," I said, my voice quiet. "They were in danger. I had to protect them."
"You could have died protecting them," Shoko said sharply. "And then what? Who would protect them then?"
I didn't have an answer to that.
Shoko sighed, the anger fading from her expression. "You're lucky. The exhaustion is temporary. Your body will recover with rest and proper nutrition. But Yumi..." She paused, her gaze meeting mine. "Don't do that again. Please."
I nodded, not trusting myself to speak.
Shoko studied me for a moment longer, then turned away. "I have other patients to check on. Rest. And don't make me come back here to scold you again."
She left, the door closing softly behind her.
I lay there, staring at the ceiling, my mind churning. The battle was over. The students were safe. But the cost—the exhaustion, the depletion—it had been too close. Too dangerous.
I closed my eyes, letting out a long, slow breath.
And then I heard the door open again.
I didn't need to look to know who it was. I could feel his presence, familiar and warm, filling the room like sunlight breaking through clouds.
Satoru.
He walked to my bedside, his footsteps soft against the floor. I opened my eyes, turning to look at him. His blindfold was back in place, but I could see the tension in his jaw, the worry in the lines of his face.
"Shoko scolded me," I said, a small smile playing on my lips. "It was very thorough."
He didn't laugh. He just stood there, his hands at his sides, his expression unreadable.
