It was the afternoon, and no-one had seen the Captain since he had walked off in the morning. The mood was subdued in the house. Even Kitty didn't sing or hum to herself. Julian and Robin abandoned their game of chess. Thomas sat sulking in a corner. Well, to be honest, that wasn't so different from normal. He was always melodramatic. Romantic poets, what can I say?

Alison had had breakfast, and made herself another mug of coffee. Then, she went straight to Pat, whom she found in the library, watching Match of the Day that Julian had put on the telly.

She knocked on the heavy wooden door. "Hey, Pat?" It swung open slowly to reveal him in a leather armchair, his chin resting on his hands.

"Hi Alison! I'm trying to cheer meself up with Match of the Day, but it's not really working. Where's the Captain got to?..."

"So Pat, I think generally you're the kindest of the Ghosts and the best at sorting out problems. What can I do for the Captain to cheer him up?"

Pat thought. He stood up. He adjusted his woggle on his neckerchief. He pushed his glasses up his nose, and looked up at Alison with eyes shining with sorrow. He uttered just two words: "Find Havers."

"How though?"

"I honestly don't know Alison. But you can go anywhere, like Fanny said. Nowhere is off limits to you. If you can find where Havers is, I think that would really make the Captain happy. That man is lovesick to the depths of his heart, and needs to see Havers again."

"Thanks! Though I'd have to make sure that Mike doesn't get into any misadventures while I'm gone. You Ghosts can keep an eye on him, right?"

"Sure! But I don't think I'll tell anyone yet. When you've put up with each other for decades, news travels fast."

"Thank you so much Pat! I'll just go downstairs and make some plans. Then I'll tell the rest of the Ghosts."

What none of them saw, was in the dark left-hand corner of the library, Humphrey's head was placed on the coffee table. He had heard the whole conversation. He smiled, thinking how happy the Captain would be. "Good luck! I agree with Pat, the Captain needs to see Havers again. Before you go, could you take me downstairs? It's cold and dark here, and there's a spider just in front of my nose. Alison?!"

Both she and Pat jumped. "Oh! Humphrey, I didn't see you there. Sure, let's go. Pat, could you carry him downstairs? You can watch me making breakfast. It's full English today, you can give me advice! I'll look for the Captain after breakfast."

"Oh, yes. I can make a delicious fried egg you know." He picked up Humphrey under one arm, and they went downstairs for breakfast.
