Masky internally cursed at himself after realising he had forgotten a lollipop. He had just spent the last ten minutes shuffling and emptying all his pockets while Y/n lead the way down the paths.

She's been so fidgety ever since last night with what they now refer to as the incident, neither want to speak about what they even saw. He only stared in silence as she struggled to even keep the tension at bay by making small talk.

"But you know– It's obviously Jane who–" she was cut off by Masky hushing her. "What?" she whispered as he scanned the area. "Never mind I thought I saw something. Let's set up post soon, we've circled the property enough." he suggested

She sighed, he was right and it definitely was going to be a long night. Over in the distance was one of the watching posts within the trees. It was a small wooden platform camouflaged in the thick treetops. All across the forest were scattered amounts of these "posts" mainly used to lookout missions and guarding.

Masky adjusted his gloves before looking over at Y/n. "You think you can handle climbing up?" he asked in a mocking tone. She groaned, "Yes! I can handle my own shit now go!" He huffed and muttered something incoherently before he began to climb up the large tree trunk.

Little frail twigs snapped and fell as he hoisted himself up into the tree, one almost hitting her in the face. "Watch where you're dropping those asshole!" she scolded. Rolling up her sleeves she kept her hard glare focused on Masky as she prepared herself to climb up as well.

Latching her hands into the little notches of the wood she began to ascend up the tree. "Come on I don't have all night for you to get up here!" he teased. "Shut up! I'm getting there." she growled.

Her bad leg slipped after this, almost causing her to fall. Despite her catching her balance Masky still held his hand out for her to grab. "I don't need your pity Timothy." "Just grab it, please?"

Y/n hesitated as she stared at his brown glove, there was this unknown tone in his voice. She hadn't recognised it before, was it...sincerity? Pushing any doubts in her mind she took his hand in hers, which suddenly yanked her up to the platform.

She felt a small gasp leave her mouth as she caught her balance on the planks of old wood. Masky, still holding onto her hand gently guided her to sit down. "Be careful! " he whisper shouted. She rolled her eyes, not wanting to argue anymore.

The breeze was light, and their breath formed smoke like clouds in the cold midnight air. She was cold but didn't care, they would probably leave for home in an hour or so. They both had their backs propped against the tree, sitting leg to leg.

She had noticed their legs were touching but didn't dare move as it was the only form of warmth she had right now.

Masky could feel the hum of his heart all throughout his body, fucking christ he hated crushes. Breathing in he stared off at the night sky in attempts to distract the pounding in his ribcage.

Y/n was lost in thought, occasionally twiddling with her own hand. The night was dark yet she could somewhat make out some splotches of clouds in the sky that gently drifted off from her field of vision.

" How do you feel?" Masky asked as he stole glances from the corner of his eyes. "Pardon?" she asked not daring to look at him. "I mean, it's been quite...eventful? For you, I mean. So...how are you?"

She stifled a sad chuckle, "Since when have you cared about how I've been doing? Did you hit your head?" she joked. There was a pause of silence before she sighed softly. "I'm...fine, I guess. Thanks for worrying. It's just been a long winter and it's pretty cold."

"You're cold?" he asked quietly. "I mean yeah we're high up and–" "Come closer." "I'm sorry?" she asked confusedly. "We're already sat against each other I can't get any closer than this." she stated matter of factly.

Masky sat up slightly to adjust his sitting position and patted the wood between his legs. "Sit in my lap." "WHAT–" "Shut the fuck up! you'll wake up the whole forest!" he whisper shouted while glancing at the ground below.

"Are you fucking crazy?! Why would I do that?!" "So you can stay warm and not catch a cold." he deadpanned. "My offer still stands unless you rather freeze to death." he added

Even though she was shivering at this point, her face felt like it was on fire. Who the fuck does he think he is?! Asking me to sit in his fucking lap! she thought as she stared him dead in the eyes.

Before she declined for a second time a huge gust of wind swept by, causing her to swallow her pride. "Fine." she grumbled. Crawling over his legs she sat in between, facing away from him and leaning her back into his warm chest.

She could feel his arms snake around her waist pulling her closer. She bit her lip, wanting to object. "It's to keep you warmer don't yell my ear off just yet." he said quietly.

In this moment she definitely was warmer than before, in more ways than one.
