Gears of War: Dave Carmine's Story

Day One

I was the first to wake up and i limped to see if the pilots were alive, they weren't. then i checked Benjamin and Clayton, they were fine. i checked the other three and they were ready for the upcoming firefight. "man, there's gonna be a lot of grubs here any minute." Benjamin said. "Ya, too many for us to handle," Rios said "we are going to need back up!" i looked at him through my helmet "after Eday, the COG has to recollect its self." i explained. "Ya but they won't leave 6 men to die would they?" Ryan said.

"We aren't going to die," Clayton said "Dave here, he's a war hero from Omega." the only one to look at me was the one that i hadn't gotten to know and the one that was silent. we all had helmets on so i couldn't tell his facial expression. "what?" i asked, he just nodded his head and looked back ahead. a moment later he pointed down the road. We all looked up and there was an army of locusts marching down the road toward our location. "everyone stay down, let me think up a strategy....... ok, Benjamin, you're our best shot, take a sniper and head into the buildings on our left, Clayton take Ryan, and Rios up into the buildings on our right, dont fire until we do, and Benjamin, dont fire until they do, understood?" "sir yes sir!" everyone yelled as the ran to their objectives.

Once everyone was in position the army was about 100 feet away from us and we opened fire, we had to have a good distance in between us. after we started to fire Clayton and his team started, soon after that heads started to explode down the field. after a few minutes a fourth of the army was down. i looked above the barrier to see how many were left and i realized that the locusts were separating, like water around a rock but backwards. the they revealed why, 3 boomers. "everyone, out of the buildings!!!" i yelled over the intercom.

"Sir i think if all of you others keep the fire on them from different directions i can keep snip..." i interrupted "no Benjamin everyone out now, i cant afford any casualties." as i finished that a boomshot went off right where Benjamin was last at and there was now a huge hole there. "anyone want to volunteer to go look, if not i will?" i asked "no sir, you go look, we will cover you." Ryan said. I slid down to the end of cover to my left as bullets went flying over my head.

I rolled to the left, out of cover, and ran into the building. i ran up the collapsing stairs into the room where Benjamin was last. he was nowhere in sight, only his helmet sat on the floor, blown in half. i staggered as a boom shot hit the floor above me. "sir," Benjamin said, i turned around, "we need to get out of here!" i agreed and we ran down the stairs and out of the door. as we ran out of the door, a boom shot went off right behind us and the building collapsed.

We got back into cover and started to fire blindly. "How much longer until reinforcements?" i asked. Rios and Ryan just looked at each other. "neither of you called for any did you?" i asked. Ryan smacked his forehead. "GOD DAMNIT, DO YOU WANT TO LIVE?" i yelled over the gun fire. "Command." Rios said over the comms. "Yes Zulu 5, what do you need?" "we need at least air support, we are pinned down with a while locust battalion in front of us. our raven was shot down and the piloted are KIA." "uhm let me check..... im sorry Zulu 5, Zulu 1 needs to confirm the back up request." she said

"This is Zulu 1, Dave Carmine we are in desperate need of back up." i said over comms. "well Zulu 1 we are short on men, im afraid you're going to have to get out of there on your own." she said finally, going to static. "well guys we dont have help.... any one have any smokes?" "ya i got a cigarette right..." Rios was saying, i interrupted "no, grenades, not cancer." I snapped back at him.

He reached behind him and grabbed a smoke grenade and handed it to me, Benjamin handed one to me as well. i armed them both and created a wall of smoke. once it was at its highest we ran down the street to our right and didnt stop until we couldn't see the street we were on any more and we climbed into the closest building and set up there for the night. "So... that was a close one..." ryan said finally after saying nothing for hours. "yes it was" Clayton said "we were lucky we made it out." the one guy the i had never talked to before just sat in a bucket in front of the window, as if he was waiting on some one.

I finally decided to just leave him alone and concentrate on how we were going to get out of the city. "There is now way that we are going to make it out of here unless a raven comes and gets us." Rios said "No..." i said with a long pause "i knew someone who got us out of worse... it came with a cost though..."
