Maya is now nine months and I've been on pins and needles waiting for the phone call that she's in labor. I'm in my class taking my medical license exam to graduate a year early, when my phone goes off in my ear. I answer it while putting my things in my bag.

"Bambina, è ora?" chiedo. "Sì, mi si sono rotte le acque."
"Sei stata in travaglio tutta la mattina?" chiedo. "Forse. Volevo aspettare che mi si rompessero le acque per chiamarti."
"Okay, ti perdono."

I switch back to english.

"I'm sorry Professor Lawson, my fiancée's in labor. I have to step out. My exam is finished though." "It's okay. Go, you're about to be a parent. Send me pictures when they're born." "Will do," I reply. I hand her my exam and run out the door. I run down the stairs, out the door and across the quad. I round the café and straight into my building. I run up to my room and immediately close and lock the door. About five minutes later, the paramedics arrive to Maya and I start talking.

"What do we have?" the EMT asks.
"Eighteen year old female. Nine months pregnant. Went into labor early this morning. Water broke about twenty minutes ago," I say before her professor interrupts.
"BP, one thirty-five over eighty-five, pulse ninety-three. She's ten centimeters dilated and contractions are every two minutes." Maya yells, interrupting us. "Carina, I swear on all that is holy. You are never coming near my vagina again."
"I think the baby is coming, guys," I tell the EMTs. The EMT checks.
"You're the girlfriend," she asks.
"Yes," Carina says.
"Your girlfriend is right. I can feel the head. You can start pushing on the next contraction."

It only takes five minutes or so of pushing and at ten in the morning Seattle time, which is seven in the evening Italy time, our baby boy, Matteo Finn Deluca-Bishop is born. They load them up into the ambulance and take them over to Seattle Grace Hospital.

Once at the hospital, they take them to the maternity ward and into a room. They examine Maya and find everything is okay. They then examine Matteo. He's six pounds, ten ounces and twenty-two inches long. He's got blonde hair and brown eyes. His blood pressure is ninety-two over fifty-eight. He's a very healthy newborn baby boy.

"He looks just like you, but with my eyes," I say. "I see us both," she answers. "Bambina, give the baby to the nurse so she can put him in his bed and take a nap. I can tell you're exhausted. You can call back when you wake up. Okay?" "Okay. I love you." "I love you both." We hang up and I get ready for bed and lay down. By eight-thirty, I'm asleep.
