Rudra gently wiped away her tears and lifted her chin, but Ruhi avoided his gaze.
"I'm sorry, Dada," Ruhi said softly.
Rudra sighed, "Why are you apologizing, Ruhi?"
"For... for everything."
Rudra pulled back and studied her. He could tell just by looking at her that she wouldn't speak up if he asked nicely, and coaxing her wouldn't work either. Her determination and stubbornness were clear in her eyes. Besides, he wasn't interested in her apologies, especially when she didn't have a valid reason.
"Get up." Rudra tried again, this time more gently. But Ruhi just looked at him with a lost expression. He sighed, realizing he needed to approach her in a different way... his way!
"I said, 'Get up, Ruhi!'" He said again, his tone becoming stern.
Ruhi looked up at him, startled. The tone... it had been so long since she had heard this tone from her Dada. It was the same warning tone that always kept her on edge, the same tone he used to reprimand her. Now that she heard it again, it felt like she was in trouble. Not needing to be told twice, she immediately stood up as Rudra shot her his infamous glare.
"Take that chair and keep it here!" Rudra ordered, pointing towards the chair in front of him.
Ruhi quickly did as she was told and stood beside the chair, looking down. She forced her mind to think about what she had done wrong to be on the receiving end of her Dada's anger. As everything flashed in her mind like a video, she clenched her eyes shut... she was wrong on every count!!
"Sit!" Rudra commanded.
Ruhi sat down and slowly looked at Rudra. The way he was leaning on the chair, with one leg crossed over the other, gave her a sense of intimidation that made her feel like she was 14 all over again. She reminded herself to keep her tounge in check until her Dada was done with her.
"By the time I am done talking, I want you to maintain eye contact with me and respond verbally only. Got it?" Rudra said firmly.
Ruhi nervously, "J..Ji!"
"So, why are you apologizing, Ruhi? Is it because of what you said to me two years ago?"
Ruhi nodded, "J..Ji" Her voice was barely audible, but Rudra caught it.
"And why do you think I'm upset with you because of that incident?"
Ruhi frowned. She knew he must be angry at her for crossing so many lines with him. What was her Dada playing at?
"I am waiting, Ruhi."
Ruhi sighed and took his hand in hers, "I shouldn't have behaved that way with you."
"And you realize that now? Suddenly? What brought this change, Ruhi?" Rudra asked sarcastically, with hurt laced in his voice, "Because as far as I remember, hum ab tk jitni bhi baar millne hai tune ek baar bhi mujhe vo nhi bulaya jo mein itne saalo se sunna chahta hoon? In fact, you avoided looking at me or talking to me. You were always hesitant towards me. Itna galat tha mein? That I don't even deserve..." He trailed off...
