Today is some super freaky witch comet and a Sunday so I would call it a win. I wasn't going to attend the comet watching function at my school but I really wanted to tell Bonnie about me and my grandpas talk last night. So I show up at the school in plain black tank top and khaki shorts. And before you puke in your mouth they're less then fingertip length so this isn't a bella swan moment.
Bonnie and Elena are talking when I arrive, so I wait a moment until Elena walks away to talk to Bonnie because I don't want Elena to think I'm crazy.
"I talked to my grandpa last night."
"What'd he say?" She responds in a hushed tone, apparently she doesn't want Elena to know she's crazy either.
"He said I come from two of the most powerful witch bloodlines in the world." I pause and wait for her to laugh, when she has no reaction I continued. "And that our ancestors were best-friends, Stella and Emily. I think he said in 1864? Anyways that was after they migrated to mystic falls and our family's have been here ever since."
"Do you believe it?"
"Do you?"
"I don't think so I mean we would know if you were the most powerful witch in the world right?"
"Yea, right." I'm glad Bonnie said something because I was starting to not trust my judgment. How could I genuinely believe this?
"Come on lets get a candle." She leads the way to a folding table full of candles.
"Hey Stefan hey Elena" I chime as I walk past. Except I get this really freaky feeling radiating off Stefan. "He kinda freaks me out" I whisper to Bonnie.
"How so?"
"I don't know it's just feeling." In that moment as if he can hear me he approaches me.
"Ruby right?"
"Mhm"
"Listen any friend of Elena's is a friend of mine. If you ever wanna talk about your heritage I think I have some insight." He chooses his words very carefully and analyzes my reactions intently. There's just nothing natural about this guy, I don't wanna say anything to Elena yet because she seems genuinely happy. I also see an opportunity here though, he seems to know something I don't. Plus I can get a feel for who he is.
"Yea that would be great, maybe you me and Elena could hang out sometime." He awkwardly nods and walks back to Elena.
"What was that about" Bonnie whispers the second he leaves.
"I don't know maybe he heard me." I giggle.
"Mystery man has super sonic hearing now"
"Oh yea for sure."

My general group decides to go to the grill and I knew I shouldn't have gone because when is show up Tyler's at a table with Elena and Jeremy. They look like their arguing.
"What's going on?"
"Apparently Jeremy's a pill-pusher and
Jeremy and Tyler are sleeping with Vicky Donovan." Caroline blurts out.
"Really Caroline?" Matt rolls his eyes.
"Sorry" she presses her lips together and throws her hands in the air.
Matt storms off, I'm assuming to look for Vicky and Elena drags Jeremy away from the table. Its me Tyler and Caroline, a trio from hell. Please get me out of here.
"Vicky Donovan?" It just comes out of my mouth. I don't even know why.
"Why do you care?"
"I don't."
"Ohh you guys like totally kissed didn't you." Caroline comments taking a sip from her drink. Me and Tyler glare at her.
"I'm gonna kill Bonnie."
"Why wouldn't you tell me or Elena" Caroline whines.
"Maybe because you've been a complete and total bitch since your dad left." Again. I dont know why I said that. Don't get me wrong Caroline deserves it but low blows like that? That's not me. "I'm sorry Caroline that wasn't cool." She gives me a false bitchy smile.
"Its fine Ruby at least you're being honest for once" she downs the rest of her drink and walks away, leaving me with Tyler. I put my head in my hands and shake my head.
"Tyler I'm sorry."
"Save it." He walks away and now I'm alone, which weirdly feels worse. I sit in my self pity for a few minutes before I search for the girls. I cant find Elena but i see Bonnie and Caroline sitting at a table talking about Vicky, I guess Matt found her.
"Hey" I sit down and smile sheepishly at Caroline.  She ignores it.
"Hey Ruby" Bonnie smiles.
"Where'd matt find Vicky?"
"Stefan found her wondering around drugged out, stitches ripped open." Caroline reports.
Stefan walks up to our table, which I found odd since he never really showed interest in anyone  but Elena.
"Hey Stefan."
"Hey, have you seen Elena?" Ok now it makes sense.
"No I'm sorry" Bonnie frowns
"But I'm gonna give you her contact info because she's big on texting and calling and you can tell her I told you so" she tears a piece of paper out and starts writing. Stefan smiles appreciatively and goes to take the paper. When their hands meet Bonnie's eyes grow wide.
"What happened to you?" Her voice trembles. Stefan looks worried, scared even. "Oh my god I'm sorry that was so rude."
"Yea sorry about her she wigs out sometimes its like her thing." Caroline attempts to cover for her but Caroline's right that was just weird. Bonnie walks away and I follow after her to the bathroom.
"What was that?"
"Ruby when I touched him I felt this feeling, worse then I've ever felt before."
"Like what."
"I don't know it's something I've never felt before. It was so cold and empty. It was so.. I dont Even know."
"Just try. Compare it to something."
"Like death. It felt like death."my eyes grow wide because that's exactly what I felt earlier when he was talking to me. These coincides have just been piling up and I can't help but notice it all started when he got to town. Plus he just knows all these crazy specific yet helpful information about our family's? Its stop weird for me.
"Call me Crazy bonnie but I'm starting to believe all this crap."
"I don't know...it's a little crazy."
"Well we should at least try."
"Try what?"
"I don't like a spell or something." She laughs at this idea, probably because it sounds ridiculous.
"Ok like what??"
"Abracadabra" I laugh and wave my hands. Obviously the only thing that happened was crazy laughter from Bonnie and I.
"Well whatever it is can wait to be investigated because I'm exhausted, night Ruby."
"Night B." I kiss her cheek and she leaves the bathroom. Why does everyday have to be so long? I look into the mirror and sigh. I see cracks spread slowly across the mirror. "What the hell?" I take a step back and watch as more and more cracks accumulate until the mirror completely shatters at my feet. "Abracadabra." I mumble in shock. I get of the bathroom as quick as I can because how do I even begin to explain that.
I figured I would watch it with my friends but now I'm so tired I'd rather watch it with my grandpa.
"I'm home pa! You gonna watch the comet?" I call out grabbing two lawn chairs and blankets.
"Ill be right out." He replies slipping his coat off.  When he meets me outside I have the chairs set up and I'm waiting for the comet. He sits next to me and we observe the stars for a few minutes while I muster the courage say something.
"Pa. I think I believe."
"Whys that?"
"I broke a mirror today. At the grill."
"How?"
"By saying abracadabra" I chuckle at the ridiculousness of it.
"Then I guess you're ready Ruby."
"For what?"
"To read your mothers letters. They'll tell you everything you need to know." My heart drops. I've never heard of these letters before and the thought of reading what could've been my mother final messages to me scares the hell out of me.
"Okay."A comet flies over our heads in all its glory. Its honestly beautiful. "Do you have magic?" He thinks for a moment.
"I used to. It will all make sense when you read your mothers letters."
"Someone should've told mom that leaving letters telling me about my magic genes is a little cliche." I laugh but I'm entirely serious. I really wish my mom was here right now. "If mom was a witch how did she die in a fire I mean she's supposed to be all powerful."
"Read the letters hun."
"Very insightful." I start to feel a drizzle so I pack up the lawn chairs and blankets and head inside. When we get inside I wait expectingly for him to give me the letters.
"Ill be right back." He walks into his room and digs through a box. Its my moms box, this I know about. It has pictures, letters, and objects from my mother. He pulls out a stack of letters bonded together by a blue rubber band.
"Read These when your ready." He hands me the stack of letters. "I'm sorry I can't be the one to tell you. I wouldn't even know where to begin. It would also feel like I'm betraying your mother."
"Pa you've done everything for me. Gave me a shot at a normal life. That's all me or mom could've asked for."

At first I intend to read them all. I take the stack of letters to my room and I'm already crying. I don't think I'll make it through all the letters.
"Dear Ruby June Hart. My beautiful baby girl. I hope to god I can tell you all of this in person one day, that I'm wasting ink right now. Things have been really strange and I'm starting to think that's not realistic.  This is the only solution I can think of. For starts you're reading this because I'm no longer in your life and weird things have been happening to you. You come from the two strongest bloodlines in the world.  If you've already done the math you would've figured out that you are the strongest witch in the world, or you will be. Those things take time. Don't get a big head my love because you have a flaw. (In magic, I know you're just perfect in every other way.) You don't have magic of your own, you're what's called a syphon. You must feed off of others magic. Recently a powerful being one that causes fear to everyone who knows his name has approached our family. He's been attempting to break a curse for his entire life, one of the ingredients is very rare to come by. He insists me and Ron, your father help him search for it and break the spell. I refuse to help this man. He is satan reincarnated. The only thing I can think of is to syphon our magic and lock it away for you. The locket you wear is syphoned with the magic of two of the most powerful covens, including mine your father and your grandfathers magic. An Infinite syphon of magic at your fingertips. The locket has been spelled so no one can remove this from you, and the magic will only start to work when you are ready. Whenever that may be. I honestly hope its never. You now carry a lot of responsibility on your shoulders so I feel I must warn you. Never help the old ones, if the old ones come looking for you, run."
Tears are running down my face and it's so much information I don't even know where to start. I still have two letters left but I'm not ready. I'm sure you're probably annoyed by this cliffhanger but you try having your world flipped upside down by your deceased mother. It doesn't feel good. I hold the locket and feel a surge of energy. I hold my hand over a bouquet of dead roses. I gave my hand a wave and the flowers reversed to their initial bright red state. My heart took several beats. Wow. This is the most incredible thing I've ever experienced in my life and no one is going to believe me.
After the excitement of being not only a witch but the best witch like ever wears off I get a sick feeling in my stomach.
Who are the old ones?
