"And who the hell are you to tell me what to do?" Her glare was fierce, but he felt a wave of regret wash over him.
Deep down, he knew he had no right to interfere, yet the love he felt for her made it impossible to stand back. The thought of anything happening to her sent a chill through him.
His gaze drifted to Rumeysa's unconscious form, a flood of emotions swelling within him. He longed to hold her, to shield her from all harm, but he was painfully aware that he had lost that right the moment he had walked away from her at the altar.
"Are you here to fulfill your promise?" Sophia's voice pierced through the heavy silence, sharp with accusation.
He understood what she meant—he had vowed to leave Rumeysa alone, to divorce her, and now she was questioning if he had come to keep that promise.
"Please, Gabriel, don't do this to her," Sophia pleaded, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears.
She knew all too well the pain Rumeysa had endured over the years because of him.
"I'm not giving her a divorce, Sophia," he replied, his voice barely a whisper.
Sophia scrutinized his face, seeing the mask of regret, pain, and sorrow that had settled there.
Gradually, her tough expression softened. "But you didn't tell us you were coming." He hung his head, shame flooding through him. "No one knew I'm here. I just wanted to see if she was okay."
Sophia nodded in understanding. "She's staying with me tonight. I already informed Dawood uncle."
He nodded, eyes still downcast, stealing a glance at Rumeysa before turning to leave. But Sophia called after him, "Where are you staying?"
He turned back, shrugging helplessly. "I don't know."
Noticing the redness in his eyes, sympathy stirred within her. "Okay, come with me," she offered gently.
He hesitated for a moment, searching her face for reassurance, then nodded. "Are you sure?" he asked, his voice laced with uncertainty.
With a warm smile, she confirmed, and he followed her to the car, each step heavy with doubt.
"Can I drive?" he asked as they approached the vehicle, his voice barely above a whisper.
Sophia nodded, handing him the keys. He slid into the driver's seat, casting glance at Rumeysa's unconscious form. It was a struggle to hold back his tears as he started the engine, the weight of his heart almost unbearable.
The drive to Sophia's apartment was steeped in silence, thick with unspoken words.
Rumeysa muttered softly in her sleep, her lips moving as if trying to communicate something lost to him. He fought to keep his composure, his eyes darting to her peaceful face, the gentle flutter of her eyelashes a bittersweet reminder of what he had lost. The only sounds were the soft hum of the engine and the occasional rush of passing cars.
Upon arriving at the apartment, Sophia tried to assist Rumeysa, but Gabriel instinctively stepped in. "Let me," he whispered, his eyes locked on her serene face.
Sophia stepped back, a mixture of sadness and understanding in her gaze. He knelt to remove her heels, lifting her into his arms, her head resting against his chest, her arms limp at her sides.
Holding her close, he felt her warmth and fragility, a stark contrast to the weight of his regret.
In that moment, he wished with all his heart that he could turn back time and erase the pain he had caused her.
