But I wonder

how does he see me?

-from a poem I wrote about my neighbour

"I've been here for years." Skai thought the girl's dull, grey eyes hid centuries of stories behind them. Echoes of the past. Something was missing. A lovely, azure sky, a lake glimmering in the morning light, joy. Blue. "How many years?" Skai's voice sounded unfamiliar to them. "I lost count a long time ago." The girl's tragic words drift into their ears. Skai forced themselves to ask the question they feared hearing the answer to. "Am I dead?" They knew the answer. They did. But they had hope. They always did. "You tell me", the girl said serenely. "Guess so." Skai shrugged. "I jumped off a cliff." They were surprisingly calm. "What's your name?" they asked the girl. She smiled sorrowfully. "I forgot."

"What's your story?" Skai asked despite knowing the answer. The girl had forgotten herself. Will I forget myself too? Skai shivered. Maybe it won't be too awful. I've never known who I am. The girl had darling freckles over her cheeks and nose. Everything around her and Skai had an odd, blue glow. The girl's hair fell in whitish tangled curls down her back. There was something ethereal to her. Something ghostly. Then it hit Skai. They were a ghost too. "Come, we mustn't stay still." Skai linked arms with the girl. Her arm was awfully cold. They began to stroll through the strange land and Skai didn't dare to ask anymore questions. "Watch out for the tree roots", the girl spoke softly. Skai stepped over one and noticed it winding through the wilted grass. Cold crept over them. They had never felt a cold quite like this. Their world had turned dark. Skai swallowed their sorrows.
