Veiled Horizons

chapter One: Edward

"So this is what had been going on here" Ed said with confusion in his face while staring at one of the monitors in the room.

The room he and many other operators with white coat were standing glowed with the light from monitors all over a wall against where Ed was standing.

The man who supervised the operators, who was also one of the managers, walked towards Ed, turning off all the monitors at once and said, "Its not what you think, Edward-" "Shut up, I know what I saw" Ed cut him off taking two steps back, "I served you all this time while you used me" Ed paused and said,"For This?" Edward's stare turned to 'The Supervisor',"I'm quitting this job, and you are not gonna try to stop me" his stare had more anger and fierce now than cofusion. His face seemed frightened and tensed.

"if you could just see the possibilities-" the supervisor tried to explain calmly but Ed cut him off, "No, I've seen enough" Ed turned and started walking towards the doorway, the automatic iron door opened sideways. His eyes teared up, feeling betrayed.

"You'll regret This!" The supervisor's voice called from behind him. Ed ignored him and walked away.

Ed knew that wasn't the end of it. Since Ed knew their secrets and what they were doing all this time, he knows how brutal they are, and that they would do whatever they can to find him.

Ed's life changed since that Incident. During the first days of survival, Ed kept looking for places to hide,stay and keep on living a normal life.

Though after a while he realised it was no longer possible, almost everywhere he goes there would be certain people who were put up to the job of finding him. Therefore, he has been living his life running from place-to-place.

Ed had always thought his lack of family was a misfortune, but now he realized it was a blessing in disguise. Without anyone to worry about or protect, he was free from the fear of having loved ones used against him.

Two years had passed, yet he still couldn't shake the feeling that he was being watched. Ed was always aware of his surroundings, wary of any familiar faces, whenever he heard sudden movements his hand instinctively went to the gap between his shoe and right leg. where he had kept a small knife and to the back of his pants where a pistol was hidden.

He even saw some men inquiring people about Ed with a picture of him in their hand. He had to change his appearance, though not completely. He now always wore a round, brown hat, a little like a cowboy hat but not too big, keeping his long black hair forward, covering his forehead and almost shading his deep, Chestnut-colored eyes. He also wore powerless glasses with a black frame.

Ed went to way too many places because of the chase that he was almost running out of places to go, though he had some hideout prepared if anyone saw him. However, the seaport of his city made him feel intriguing, he wondered why he hadn't been there before, but he wasn't sure if he meant before or after the chase had begun. It was a small seaport which always seemed to be busy with people.

Ed decided to stay at the bustling port for as long as he could without drawing attention. He knew he was safer in the crowd, blending in with the throngs of people coming and going. He bought a cup of tea from a nearby shop and walked further inside the port, finding a chair where he could sit and watch the sea. As he took a sip of his tea, he felt a rare sense of relaxation wash over him. For the first time in a while he felt relaxed, safe and allowed himself to enjoy the soothing view of the ocean.

Some moments later, when he had almost finished his tea, he seemed to notice a travel agent talking to someone on phone,

"This island is the best choice, sir. So how many will be aboard the ship including the teachers and students?" the agent said, and was taking notes during the call.

Ed's attention now completely turned to the agent, his face full of suspicion, if what he suspected was true, then he have to stop it however he can.

But he need to know the date of departure of the ship to stop it, Ed started listening intently,he heard the agent repeat what the other party on the call said, like, "Two schools, huh? Unison and Saints, alright" then the agent wrote it down in his handbook. Then after some moments, Ed finally made out, 20th May-just two days away- at 3:30pm.

The agent finally hung up the phone politely saying thanks and turned towards Ed, and Ed pretended to drink his tea, which was no longer there in his paper cup. When he was sure the agent wasn't looking he stood up and walked outside.

Ed kept thinking about what the agent had said and he realized the one-sided conversation he heard from the agent wasn't enough to confirm his suspicions.

'It could be just some normal island,there's more than enough islands on this planet for it to be 'that' island', Ed thought, trying to calm himself down.

But then he remembered hearing the agent say it's not like any other island and that it had fun and engaging things for the students, no matter what age they are. The things the agents said, the way he had the whole conversation, made Ed remember something from his past not too long ago.

He decided to linger at the seaport, keeping a close eye on the travelers and workers as they moved about, while also keeping an eye to see if anyone noticed him. His focus sharpened when he noticed the captain of the ship the next day, Ed recognised him-an uneasy feeling washed over him. 'it looks like I was right', he thought.

He decided to come at the time when the ship leaves, and stop the students from leaving or at least warn them, though Ed knew warning wasn't enough. The least he could do was try.
