Cassie leaned in, her wide eyes fixed on Bellamy's unconscious form. He stirred, and she poked his cheek gently. Bellamy woke with a start, shaking his head and growling softly.
"No! Why would you do that?" Sia exclaimed, concern etched on her face.
Cassie bit her lower lip, her eyes apologetic. "I don't know. But he's awake now. Isn't that good?"
Ed and Sia frowned at her, their gazes shifting to Bellamy. Cassie moved away, feeling a mix of relief and worry. She was relieved that Bellamy was awake, but her concern for Finn lingered.
As she stepped back, Cassie made a decision. She had had enough of the island, the zombies, and the robotic creatures. She was determined to find Finn and escape.
Before she could share her decision with the group, Ed spoke up. "Listen, everyone. I know what happened was really saddening and frightening, but that doesn't mean we should stop and run away."
Cassie felt a surge of frustration. She couldn't hold it in any longer. "N-No!" she stammered, regaining her composure. "I don't want to do this anymore."
The group turned to face her, their expressions confused. Ed's jaw tightened. "What do you mean? You don't want to bring them down?" he asked, his voice slow and measured.
Cassie's eyes locked onto Ed's. "I don't know. I've had enough. I just need to find Finn and get home. If anyone's coming with me, we'll go together. Otherwise, let me go."
The group fell silent, unsure of how to react. Ash, who had been leaning against a tree, observing the scene with an air of detachment, suddenly pushed himself off the trunk. His eyes narrowed, and he walked closer to Cassie.
Everyone's eyes turned to Ash, surprised by his sudden involvement. Ash wasn't usually one to take charge or get emotional, but there was something in his expression that commanded attention.
"Anyone going with her?" Ash asked the group, his voice firm but calm.
The silence was palpable. Ash glanced back at Cassie, his expression softening. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a key.
Cassie's eyes widened as Ash placed the key in her palm. "My boat is parked on the beach where you guys arrived," Ash explained softly. "Find Finn, and make sure you get home safe. The boat has coordinates that'll help you get back."
Cassie felt a surge of gratitude toward Ash. She looked at the key, her mind racing with thoughts of Finn and escape.
For a moment, Cassie hesitated, unsure of what to do next. She looked at Ed, Sia, and Eva, her eyes searching for reassurance. But it was Ash's calm, determined expression that gave her the courage to take the next step.
Cassie took a deep breath and turned to Sia and Eva. She hugged them tightly, tears streaming down their faces. The hug felt like a farewell, and Cassie's heart ached.
"If anything happens to you while you're on the island, make sure you come back to us," Eva sobbed.
"Yeah," Sia agreed, her voice trembling. "Now go. I'm not saying goodbye if you're waiting for that."
Cassie shook her head, a small smile on her lips. She turned back, giving the group a quick glance. Ash nodded at her, his eyes serious.
Cassie looked over her shoulder as she overheard Ed say, “You did the right thing” his hand on Ash's shoulder.
“Thanks, Dad” Ash teased to which Ed shrugged and gave him a gentle nudge.
Cassie smiled at that, then took another deep breath and stepped into the forest. The trees loomed above her, their branches creaking softly in the fading light. She felt a shiver run down her spine as the silence enveloped her.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, the forest grew darker, the shadows deepening. Cassie's heart pounded in her chest, her senses on high alert. She stumbled upon a clearing, the trees twisted and distorted, their branches like grasping fingers.
The distorted trees reminded her of the truth of how these are all human creations, designed to manipulate and control them. She knew she was just a pawn in a sinister game. Her confidence draining as she realized surviving alone wasn't meant for a faint hearted girl like her. But to find Finn, she must keep aside her overthinking nature and be determined without letting her mind wander.
"Finn!" she called out, her voice barely above a whisper.
The silence was oppressive, punctuated only by the soft crunch of leaves beneath her feet. Cassie's eyes scanned the darkness, her heart racing with anticipation.
Suddenly, she heard a faint rustling behind her. Cassie's body froze, her eyes wide with terror. Her movements slow as she turned. She strained to see what lurked in the darkness, her breath coming in short gasps.
“Finn?”
