The Candy Canyon Kingdom smelled of gluttony and the promise of type 2 diabetes.
The candy elephant was obnoxiously slow so to pass the time, me and Ragatha ganged up on Jax in a 2 versus 1 game of rock paper scissors. The loser got slapped on the hand. If they lost three times in a row, the slap was in the face.
I was aiming for Jax's face when the elephant sauntered its way into the Candy Canyon Kingdom gates. As we passed through, glittery confetti showered on us as pastel mannequin NPCs clapped and cheered as if we were celebrities.
The mood was designed to be contagiously uplifting but Jax was having none of it. He sighed dramatically and rested his elbow on my shoulder."So hot stuff, fancy ditching this quest and go somewhere else?"
"I don't think that's possible," I countered, glancing at the elephant that had started to slow down. "We're already h- Jax what are you -"
He suddenly grabbed the side of my face, tilting it up to meet his smirking expression, trailing his finger dangerously close to my mouth.
"I said I was gonna make you fall for me sweetheart, so that's what I'm gonna do." Jax stopped his finger at the corner of my mouth. "Don't look so surprised, we both know you're-"
The carriage abruptly rolled to a stop in front of a medieval-style castle with a couple of candy-cane arches in front, and I took the chance to twist away and calm my pounding heart.
Calm yo shit Y/n, he's just trying to mess with you.
A tall carmine-pink princess regally stepped out of the castle, beaming cheerfully at us. The sugar-dusted candied fruit slices that served as her hair gleamed in the bright summer sun as she trotted to a stop in front of us.
"Ah, you must be the brave knights sent by God," she gestured to a glass mural of Caine on the castle's front, "to help us with our recent catastrophe!"
Despite myself, I had to stifle an unhinged giggle. Caine was in his finest bullshittery era.
Ragatha quickly spoke up.
"That's us, ma'am. Your kingdom's awesome by the way, love the vibe. Look Pomni, we're already friends with the princess," she added after the candy princess thanked her."I'm not a child, you don't have to hype me up," Pomni deadpanned sulkily.
"I assume you've been informed of your mission," the candy princess continued, "the bandits that robbed us used a modded syrup tanker, so we figured the best way to go head to head with them is to give you a war rig of your own."
The crowd of pastel mannequin NPCs parted to reveal a candy-themed tanker, trundling magnificently to a stop while squashing an unlucky mannequin.
"Ooh, violence." Jax nudged me, giving me a shit eating grin. That mischievous glint was back in his eye. "It's finally getting interesting. Don't you think, darling?"
"If you're trying to rizz me up it's not working," I flared.
"What time period is this supposed to be again?" Pomni blearily looked around, half focusing on Ragatha and the candy princess.
"The Dark Ages," I told her.
"I agree."
The candy princess presented Ragatha with a striped pink-and-purple key, and also beckoned to me. I approached her, slightly confused.
She handed me another key, tucking it safely into my hands.
"My dear warrior, this is a spare key I entrust upon you should anything happen to the first one that's with your friend. I hope you won't let it fall into the wrong hands?"
"I'm sure Ragatha is capable of keeping the key safe, er - Your Highness," I fumbled with my words, "I don't think-"
She only laughed merrily, refusing to take the key back.
"Oh, please call me Loo. And don't underestimate yourself. You have a kind soul deep down, dear warrior, and I believe that you'll keep it safe from thieving hands. Now go, our kingdom needs you!"
She ushered me, all shocked and pink, back to my friends.
