YAAHOOOOO
matt's pov:
chris:
i think im gonna ask katey out
-
WHAT. does he not understand what's going on right now? i text back: "we're all going to the hospital in 20 fucking minutes. you can NOT ask her out." chris looks up at me, and gestures for me to walk inside.
"why?" he asks. "what?!" i nearly shout. "why can't i ask her out?" he asks innocently. "because chris...we're getting ready to go see micah. you can't do that." he takes a second to process this. "b-but i wanna tel-" i stop him before he can make a fool of himself. "no chris! this isn't your moment! it's micah's. just don't say anything until like tomorrow." i tell him.
"but-"
"no." i say. "end of conversation." i can tell that he's desperate to tell katey, but i can't let him say anything right now. for all the right reasons.
chris' pov:
i wasn't expecting matt to not want me to ask katey out. cuz that's not fair. matt asked katey out when andrew was in a dark place. "but maaattt!" i yell after him. "you sound like a fucking sheep. what do you want?"
"i love herrr!" i whine. "you're being cringey." matt says, continuing to walk. "yeah but...yeah but i...when are we going?" i manage to stutter out. "10 minutes. let's get a move on." he says, dropping down the cvs bags on the counter. "we gotta pick up mason, jon, and ally as well." he adds.
him and i walk outside. nick is sitting on the crack where the garage starts and the driveway ends, throwing pebbles around. "step on the crack you break your momma's back." katey says. "i know." nick says, putting his foot on the crack. "huh?" katey asks, she looks at me and matt for input.
"she's homophobic." nick blurts.
"oh. that sucks." katey says.
"yeah." nick says softly.
"what about your dad?" katey asks. i feel myself get hot and almost start crying. matt sniffs.
"umm." nick looks up, his eyes glistening in the afternoon sun. "things aren't that good with him either."
katey looks at me. "chris? you good? you too matt?" she asks, then seems to realize something. "what happened between you and him?"
"...he was...he beat us." nick lets out. matt starts crying. "oh matt!" katey and nick say in near unison. nick stands up to hug him. "im sorry...im sorry. let's just go." he apologizes. "no matty, it's fine we can wait as long as you need." nick says, hugging matt and rubbing his back.
-
after a couple of minutes, matt, nick, katey, and i are in the car, listening to nick's choice of california girls. nick, katey, and i are yelling the lyrics and matt looks annoyed, but still amused. just tryna lighten the mood? but how are you gonna ignore matt being jealous? how are you gonna just ignore matt not wanting you to be with katey? don't you think something's up with that? the voice is louder now, giving me a headache, tryna convince me im doing wrong. "it's my choice for a song now." matt says, barely halfway into this song. "youre gonna pick a boring one!" nick shouts. "womp womp." matt says, playing front desk by hotel ugly.
then i remember where we're going, and guilt fills my body. we stop at ally's house first. she walks out the front door yelling to her mom that she'll be back in a couple hours. "hi guys." she says, once she gets to the car. nick and katey scooch down.
we drive to jon's house. the yard is neat, and jon's little siblings are playing who knows what outside. i think tag...maybe not. his mom yells something at him, and he comes down his driveway. his little brother asks him something to which jon responds, ruffling the little boy's hair. he opens the door and sits down on the floor in front of nick. "feels like im about to give him a haircut." nick says, pulling his feet up and crossing his legs.
mason's house is the final one we go to. he's already sitting on the front porch, on a lawn chair with his feet up on it. his phone is propped on his legs, as he scrolls through messages. not sending any. he looks up at the sound of the engine, and slowly gets up, as though he's injured. he walks up to the car and puts his phone in his pocket.
"where do i sit?" he asks, his head down. "uhh the trunk?" ally suggests. he immediately starts getting annoyed and teary eyed at that. "what do you want me to get hurt or something? im not sitting in the trunk!" he practically announces to the neighborhood. "i'm sorry. do you need me to sit in the trunk?" ally asks. "fine." he says almost poutily.
by this time, ive turned my head around to see mason and ally. ally gets out of her seat to go sit in the trunk. i see scars on mason's legs. matt starts driving. nick seems to notice the scars too, because he looks at mason with a worried look, then to me, just to ensure he isn't going crazy. "mason are you doing good?" i ask him. "yeah." he mumbles, slowly lifting his knees up and wrapping his arms around them. "just...just going through a rough patch." he mutters, looking out the window. nick side hugs him, "you can talk to us whenever." he tells him, as we pull into the hospital parking lot. here goes nothing.
hope you liked that one! it was a lot shorter than the last one and i might post another chapter later idk. have a great day and stay safe! <33
