Arriving at a small pocket park I stopped. I could tell he was near; his scent filled the air...along with the tantalizing scent of blood. I listened, nothing, then an almost silent footfall about two meters behind me, and the sound of air rushing as something whistled towards my head.
I blocked the blow easily, twisting around and grabbing it in mid air, stopping it instantly. With a twist of my arm I threw him sideways. He landed hard, but he still jumped up and lunged for me again. Even though he came at me with blinding speed, I could still see his every movement clearly in the moonlight, as if it was in slow motion. I dispatched him again with a kick which would have killed a human, but merely sent him flying backwards into a tree.
After a moment he got up, but had the sense not to attempt to attack me again. He regarded me with eyes that were silver tinted, with long thin pupils like a cat. I could see the tips of his fangs as his mouth curved into a snarl. They were not like the artificial ones that many humans wear in movies; they were long thin and slightly curved, deadly looking, sharper than any weapon or tool. Nothing was comical about them in any way. As I watched they slowly receded back up into his mouth, his eyes darkened to their natural dark brown under his almost black hair the pupils returning to their normal shape, but remained large to allow him to see in the darkness. Nothing marred his typically smooth pale skin.
When he continued to do nothing but stare at me, I said "good evening". I watched shock and mistrust flicker across his face before he answered, "Who are you?" my eyes flicked to the body lying on the ground a couple of meters behind him. A young female in her late teens, part of her throat was missing, her blood splattered the surrounding area.
"You can call me Jade" I shifted slightly towards the body and another snarl ripped from his throat, his eyes once again turning silver. I held my hands up in front of me "whoa calm down, getting a bit territorial there aren't we?"
"This is my town, you should leave, now" I raised an eyebrow;
"Or what?"
"Or I'll kill you" I wasn't worried, I'd already established that his was weaker than me, so I ignored the threat,
"You've been killing a lot of people; it's been in the newspapers"
"So?"
"So? What if they find out who's been leaving all those bodies around town? What if they find you?"
"Who cares if they do? What are they gonna do? Lock me up? You know as well as I do, there isn't a prison cell that could hold a vampire."
"That is not the point. You will expose us all!"
"Well maybe I should! We could put the humans in their place, show them who the real hunters are! We could feed whenever we want! On anyone we want!" he laughed loudly, the sound echoing off of the surrounding trees. I sighed to myself; I had hoped he could be saved, reasoned with, but it was impossible, he liked his power far too much.
"I'm sorry, but I can't allow that to happen" His laughter stopped as abruptly as if I'd unplugged it, his expression turning hostile.
Before I'd finished taking a step towards him, he'd lunged towards me. I let the momentum carry us backwards, and rolled all the way over. I got a glimpse of the manic expression in his eyes before my fist his the side of his face, followed by my foot as I jumped up and twisted away to give myself some room. "Where is your maker?" I demanded. It amazed me that anyone could create a new vampire like this and just leave them to become violent and insane and risk everything.
"He's dead" he laughed.
"Who killed him?" he lunged toward me again and I kicked him back, "who?" he growled and started circling around me, so that I had to turn to keep him in sight,
