Chapter 7 (The web of Deceit)

Maximilian and Leonid sat in the dimly lit tavern, their minds racing with the information Sabine had revealed. Kristof, Viktor's brother, was behind the attempts on their lives, and he was connected to the Congress of Nations.

"What do we know about Kristof?" Maximilian asked, his eyes narrowing.

"Not much," Sabine replied, her voice low. "He's a powerful man, with connections to the highest echelons of society. But he's also ruthless and cunning."

Leonid's eyes gleamed in the darkness. "We need to get closer to him, find out what he's planning."

Maximilian nodded, his mind working overtime. "I have an idea. Viktor's hosting a masquerade ball tonight, and Kristof will be there. We can use it as an opportunity to gather more information."

Sabine's smile was like a whispered secret. "I can get you an invitation, Captain. But be warned, Kristof won't hesitate to kill you if he discovers your true identity."

Maximilian's jaw clenched. "I'm not afraid of him. Let's do it."

The masquerade ball was in full swing, the music and laughter echoing through the grand ballroom. Maximilian and Leonid, dressed in their finest attire, masks covering their faces, mingled with the guests.

Kristof was easy to spot, his eyes gleaming with a sinister intensity. Maximilian and Leonid kept a safe distance, observing his every move.

As the night wore on, they noticed a peculiar exchange between Kristof and a mysterious woman. Her mask was red, her dress a flowing black gown.

"Who is she?" Leonid whispered, his eyes fixed on the woman.

Maximilian's gaze narrowed. "I don't know, but we need to find out."

As they watched, the woman slipped out of the ballroom, Kristof following closely behind. Maximilian and Leonid exchanged a glance, and without a word, they followed.

The night was about to take a deadly turn, and Maximilian and Leonid were running out of time.
