*Present time*

"Jane!" My best friend/roommate yells from across the room. I love her to death, but damn can I sit on the toilet for two minutes without her yelling for me?

"Yes!?" I yell out.

"Can you hurry up? We are going to be late and you're stinking up the entire apartment with your shit" She finally texts me instead of yelling halfway across the dining room. Our apartment is only a 2 room, 1 bath, thin walls, etc... by time that I'm done she's already at the car waiting for me.

"Took you long enough... Was thinking you fell in." She says with a glare.

"Okay mom calm down. It was only 10 minutes." I hiss back

"Try 30... We are 10 minutes late because you took forever trying to shit your intestines out." She speaks

We arrive to our destination to be met with two large men stationed in front of a Mahogany door lined with gold details. It immediately screams "I'm rich and better" not very welcoming. if you ask me. We give our invitation and walk in to see a few people at every table in the large ballroom area. Waiters rushing around with drink and food trays, singer and dancers up on the stage. People were having fun and laughing with friends. It was all good until a blood curdling scream came from one of the tables putting everyone in a panic.

Someone had been coughing and throwing up blood like their organs were failing. Lucky for them they came to a party that was held for graduating biochemists, and doctors. So EMT's and police were on standby, the person was quickly taken to the hospital and sadly died from blood loss. The event was all over social media in a matter of days, news programs were talking all about the "Havard student who tragically died from mysterious causes." The doctors said that it could've been a new strand of Covid, but no one truly knew what happened.

Soon after this incident other people were dying from blood loss, sadly my parents included. People from all over the world were losing loved ones from the mystery virus, no one knew who/what started it and no one knew how to cure it. It was chaos everywhere and no one could end it. Doctors had found this new virus to be "Different and complex", but everyone knew that those were lies. If the fucking doctors couldn't help, then it was clear to see that we were all fucked.

The deceased started to come back to life in a way, they couldn't see or talk but they had full control of their bodies. Like they were puppets to an invisible parasite living inside the carcasses.  In a matter of months, the world had turned to absolute chaos. People were either shot, bitten or taken by the virus. To soon turn into the monsters that the world is full of, to be forced to the life of horror and blood. Mothers and fathers have lost their children to this god forsaken earth, and no doctor even tried to help them....

*A month later*

"We need supplies" I tell my roommate Kiara; she keeps putting it off and I'm sick of starving. We need food, and we need it now. I grab my stuff and try to leave but she stops me at the window.

"Stop! It's dangerous out there. Jane, you'll get killed." Concern lacing her voice, it doesn't matter if it's dangerous or not, we will die from starvation before we die from the fucking zombies.

"Kiara, I love you, but I need food. I will be careful, I promise." I say leaving her hold and heading out into the unknown. To see the same place, we used to call home be destroyed in such a short time is heartbreaking. Zombies patrol every corner of the apartments, so I take the rooftops until I see a clear road. Staying down and making little to no noise I can hear all of their groans and shuffles in the dirt below. I throw pots and pans in different directions just to open space to jump across roofs without getting spotted. Whatever parasite that is inside all of them is incredibly stupid considering it took their ability to see.

I spot another character doing parkour on the apartment stairs. Pushing zombies in their wake, throwing things and causing more to gather in their direction. I look closer to realize that its Brody Klark. He was one of the leading scientists in my department, he was more focused on curing cancer then most of older doctors. He was always to clean and kept together so to see him covered in blood and dirt is a shocker. Don't tell Kiara but I always thought he was pretty dashing for a man his age, he really isn't much older than us, but he sure did act older.

Brody was Kiara's ex, and I was never able to tell him my feelings because shortly after they broke up the fucking world decided to end. It's all bullshit if you ask me, maybe it's God sending a message telling me that I'll never find love. Which would make sense considering he decided to smite majority of the male population. Fuck God who needs him anyways, he was never there for me whenever I called out so why the fuck should I care about what he has in store for me. I wanted to breakdown at the thought of that, but a scream caught me off guard. Brody was overwhelmed with zombies, and one had managed to bite him. He threw his arms around failing to fight them off as they towered over him biting and pulling skin off.

His screams slowly disappeared as the zombies moved away from his body. In a matter of seconds Brody's torn figure rose to follow the same pace as the rest of the hoard. Groaning and dragging his feet in the same manner as the rest. The sight made bile rise up in my throat, but I fought the urge and continued my journey to the store...
