I open the double doored fridge searching for something to munch on to cure my hunger. My eyes land on an apple that looks to be fresh, I reach for it, but someone puts a hand on my arm stopping me.
"Jane. We need to talk" Jonah says while leaving my arm.
"About?" I question
"About your "friends" I don't trust them. We need to be careful on what we do/say" he says while scanning the room.
"Jonah, you don't know them like I do, they are good people. I promise they won't hurt you." I rub my hand down his arm trying to give reassurance.
"Please just be careful, okay?" The look in his eye is pure concern and disarray. I give a small smile and finish grabbing my apple. We both leave the kitchen joining Kaite and Hayden in the resting area. We all talk about what we have done since the fall, and how we have coped. Thankfully no one has turned to addictions for comfort, and we have actually been pretty busy trying to stay alive.
"So, Jonah, how did you two meet?" Kaite asks curiously.
"Oh, I found her on a rooftop trying not to have a panic attack." He replies effortlessly
"Oh?" Hayden chimes in
"Haha, yea. I had just found my roommate as a zombie and my head was in a bad place. Jonah is really the only reason I'm even alive right now." I speak in a slightly sad tone, keeping my head down.
"Uh, yea. Anyways how did y'all two meet?" Jonah switches the subject trying to lighten the mood... We all chat for a while, and I finally call it and head to bed. I slept maybe an hour before someone had the nerve to shake me awake.
"Hey what the fuck!" I yell out trying to fight them off.
"Jane, Jane! Calm down" Jonah whispers
"Wh- Jonah?! Jonah what the hell man! Why would you do that?" I say wide-eyed and wide awake.
"We have got to go Jane. They are planning on using us for the cure" he says frantic
"What?! No, no that can't be right" I say trying to make sense of his words
"I swear Jane. They aren't the same people that you once knew." He says while trying to get me up
"I know them better then you Jonah! So please, how can I believe you over them?" I ask
Hurt flashes in his eyes and I immediately regret what I said "Fine. Then go ask your so called "best buddies"" he says while walking off
"No, Jonah! -" I say but he slams the door in my face. I try to fall asleep again, but his words play on repeat in my head. I finally come to the conclusion that I can't sleep, so I get up to try and find him.
"Jonah?" I call out
"Oh, hey Jane. What are you doing up this late?" Hayden asks from behind making me jump.
"Oh! Uh I'm just looking for Jonah, have you seen him at all?" I question
"No, sorry. I haven't maybe Kaite saw him somewhere." He says "Well it's late so I'm going to head to bed. Talk to you in the morning Jane" He speaks while walking off. There is no way they are going to use US for the cure. Jonah must've heard something wrong, or miscommunicated. Hayden and Kaite are good people, they would never. Right?...
I finish my conversation and continue looking for Jonah. I check every room and bathroom leading to his dorm. The lab has a total of 13 rooms just in case students wanted to spend the night and finish working on their projects. I pass by the kitchen to see Jonah and Kaite chatting.
"I don't know about Jane" Kaite says. "Shes changed since the fall, and I'm not sure if it's for the good." She speaks with concern, but I can tell that it's fake. All of those acting classes she took must really pay off in certain situations.
"Uhm, she seems fine to me Kaite." Jonah said trying to fight for me. "I haven't seen her since dinner so I'm not really sure" Since dinner?? but he was just in my room warning me about Hayden and Kaite... What's going on here. Why am I seeing things that haven't happened.
"Yea. Who knows, maybe I'm just paranoid. You know it's been so long since I've had normal human conduct." She speaks while rubbing a hand down his arm. Making small circles in his palm. Something burns deep inside, and my blood is hot. I finally put on my big girl pants and walk in.
"Hey guys! Can't sleep?" I question going to the fridge. I notice that Kaite's hand immediately shoots to her side, leaving Jonah's arm alone.
"Hey Jane" Jonah says walking over. He leans in close to my ear "I still don't trust them" He whispers, "True friends don't talk bad about others" He finally pulls away and I can see Kaite fuming in my rear-view.
"Come talk with me Jane" Kaite butts in
"Oh, um okay" I glance at Jonah but he's already sitting down eating. So, I walk over to Kaite who is angrily waiting. "What's up?" I question
"'What's up'? What's up is that you have been taking my chances at a boyfriend since we were in grade school Jane. What's up is that I'm sick and tired of being your shadow. WHAT'S UP is that I've gone this ENTIRE time without sex because Hayden is head over heel in love with you! Jane why couldn't you have just died with the world. Why do I still have to be YOUR shadow even now?" At first, she was angry, but now? Now she is on the verge of tears and can't seem to keep it together.
"I-I'm sorry Kaite. I didn't know that you felt that way... I would never take anyone who you like away from you, I'm sorry." I say pulling her in for a hug.
"I-It's been so so hard trying not to be your understudy, Jane. To actually find a guy who isn't in love with you is so hard." She says hugging me back. "Just please give me a chance with Jonah, don't take him for yourself like you did Hayden." Tears melt into my shirt, and she is practically shaking.
"I don't want either of them Kaite, I never did. I always have seen Hayden as a friend, and Jonah? I just met Jonah there's nothing to even go on right now. So, shoot your shot, take that chance girl and if it backfires then fuck them alright?" I say with a light chuckle.
We both walk back into the kitchen to see Hayden and Jonah fighting "Hey what the fuck man!" Jonah yells out. Trying to push back Hayden like he is a rabid dog.
"Why would you say those things about Jane?! What did she ever do to you man?" Hayden speaks angrily. Whatever Jonah did or didn't say must have really pissed him off.
"Hey! break it up!" I say butting into their argument. I know that once I get in the middle, they will both stop throwing punches. "What the hell is wrong with you two?!" I yell out
"He started it!" They both say while pointing at each other. "Hey!"
"Hey, I don't give a fuck on who started it. Now end it before I put you both in timeout." Kaite says.
"TIMEOUT?! WE ARE NOT CHILDREN!" They both yell out
"You're acting like them so why not get the same punishment?" She says with a glare. I let out a small laugh. They finally untangle from each other and walk off into different parts of the room.
"Hey Jonah, can I talk with you?" Kaite asks. She glances at me as a 'Pray for me' sign.
Jonahs words linger in my mind, but I shove them down. He must have been mistaken, but what caused them to start fighting? What had Jonah said about me? I decide to just leave it and not think about it too much...
(Hey! So, the next part will be different. It's going to be Kaite's POV and her back story. So I hope you like it!)
