I reach the store in a hop skip and a jump; I climb down from the roofs making my way through the back door. I know the store is empty because I cleared it out shortly after the world ended. Everyone who once lived in this area either tried to leave or died due to the people, we once called family walking around outside. I slip through the isles looking for different types of canned items I can cook. I stay clear of the frozen section because the local power lines were taken out by stupid drivers who were trying to escape the area. I take my time scanning the dry section grabbing cereals, canned corn, mashed potatoes, bread, etc... Just the bare essentials that we can use to get by for a few weeks.
I stuff all of the items in my backpack and make my way outside. I check the roads to see the fastest path to the rooftops leaving no haste. I parkour up the stairs and run across the rooftops like a ninja. My slim figure makes it easier to climb and jump onto different things, I reach the apartments in a few short minutes knocking on the window for Kiara to let me in. I looked in through the window when she didn't arrive.
"Hello? Kiara!" I call out putting my ear to the window to try and hear for other people. Fuck Kiara what have you done... I finally spot her with blood all down her shirt, pale skin, and misty eyes. The virus has taken her, I should've stayed with her she pleaded with me to stay, and I still went out leaving her to die alone. blood rushes to my head and I stumble back causing a pan to fall making a loud crash. Other zombies heard the ruckus and came over to investigate, looking all around trying to find what caused it.
"Shit shit shit" I whisper to myself trying not to panic. I glance back when Kiara starts banging on the window trying to reach me. "I'm so sorry" I say holding a hand up to the window. She must have sensed I was there because she started grunting and growling at me. I finally get up and go back on the rooftops to look for other empty apartments that I can stay at for the time being. Looking around I see that everyone is either overrun with zombies or have been boarded up, leaving me no choice but stay on the roofs.
I've lost everything to this fuckin virus and I'm sick of it, I'm a fucking biochemist I should be able to fix this. Long hot tears fall from my eyes making it hard to see, I fucking hate the world, I hate the person who started this, and I hate myself for leaving Kiara when she was dying. I could've saved her, I could have found a cure when they had us making one, I could've... I stop myself when someone puts their hand on my shoulder making me jump in defense.
"Hey! I'm not here to harm you." The mysterious person says.
"Who are you. How did you find me??" I ask knowing that I made my little area well hidden.
"My name is Jonah, Jonah Walker" he says with a hand stuck out for me to shake. "And yourself?" He questions.
"Jane, Jane Hardy" I say taking his hand in mine. He looks oddly familiar, but I can't put my finger on from what.
"Jane?! Jane Hardy as in the same Jane Hardy from high school??" He says surprised, which causes me to remember him. "I heard you went to Harvard to be a scientist!" He says excitedly
"Yea, ha-ha I did. Didn't work out as planned but it was a good opportunity" I say with a slight laugh. "What about you? Did you ever go to Julliard?" I always knew he was into theater but wasn't sure if he had taken the scholarship to that college
"No, I didn't by time I had figured out what I wanted to do the world went to shit." He speaks while looking at our surroundings.
"Oh well, not like you could've gotten far anyways" I say trying to lighten the mood. It sucks to know that we could well be the last people on earth, to know that the next gen will never be able to see the growth and expansion of technology. The fucking iPhone 15 was the last phone to ever be made, it's just sick. A loud bang causes both of us to run over to edge and look down to see cars rolling through shooting at the people below. bodies dropping left and right, people with machine guns yelling out to call more to come over.
"Looks like they found a way to kill them" I say quietly trying to not draw attention to us.
"Yea... I suppose so." He says, looking at the bloodbath that is going on. "I have been thinking Jane, since you're basically a scientist could you somehow find a cure for the virus?" He asks while looking at me curiously.
"Hm, well I can sure try but I would need a lab and a safe environment." I say thinking about the basement lab at Harvard... "If I can get to my apartment then I can grab my keycard and we could go check out the sub-basement that Harvard used for a laboratory. Shit, my roommate Kiara was turned into a zombie. We would have to bypass her to get into my room." I say trying to remember the route she takes.
"Hm, well we should get moving, better now than later when all those guys come barging through the buildings." He says while standing up holding a handout to pull me up. A plan has been made to find my card. We both get up and run across the rooftops trying our best to stay out of the sight of the people below.
