We pulled onto a nearby highway trying to reach Harvard in the quickest way possible. Zombies from the gas station ran behind us attempting to get in the car, they are attracted to the loud engine. Luckily, we are faster and drive away, leaving them in the dust. Once we are on the highway, we drive past tons of abandoned cars and semi-trucks; motorcycles are left on the sides of the road with zombies to guard them. It's terrible to know that all of these people tried to escape just to lose their lives anyways.
"That was close Jane" Jonah says looking back at the dead.
"I made it out safely, that is all that matters right? Now we can make our way to Harvard without any distractions." I say tonelessly, I was freaking out when the zombies ran towards me. I didn't think that I would make it out alive, but yet here I am. Alive and well, not one of them thank the Lord.
As we are driving, I spot a couple of walkers on the highway. Trash and other things are on the road, so I have to swerve out of the way. As the past the city I spot multiple buildings that appear to have been burned down. Others have broken windows and smashed cars. There are zombies in every corner and no survivors to be seen, no one is alive anymore. At least not in the way they used to be. In the corner of my eye, I see one of the army trucks from earlier, I see people with machine guns, and gunners on the ground shooting at the dead having them fall in a matter of seconds.
Jonah looks out the window and watches them lay waste to everything around. His face pales at the sight, he quickly turns back to me with a scared expression. "What happens if they find us?" He asks me like I'm supposed to know the answer, like I am all knowing. Like I'm one of those saviors we read about in storybooks. Like I'm that one person who has every solution to every problem or issue. Even though I'm none of those things I still try and think about saying something to calm him down. When I can't seem to find anything, I just look at him with an "I have no clue" face.
"I-I'm not sure, let's pray that it never happens." I say turning back to face the road. The elephant in the car is still there and all I can do right now is brush it off like it is nothing. When in reality it isn't just "nothing." It is a VERY big something, and that something scares the shit out of me. It is what has kept me up this whole car ride, hell it is what has kept me up since this whole goddamn thing started. And it could very well be the death of me...

A Good Girls Guide to a Cure: Harvard
We finally reach Harvard right before sunrise, and there are cars in every parking spot. I scan the area as we get out making sure there are no zombies surrounding the area. Once I make sure it's clear we head for the back entrance, it is closer to the stairs and way faster. I look back behind us and see a couple of the deceased walking around the tennis and basketball courts. Since we are only a couple feet from the door I turn to Jonah.
"Run." I whisper-shout to him who thankfully takes the hint and beelines it for the door. We get inside and are met with two zombies stuck on the staircase, four in the hallways, and two more by the emergency exit door. "Crap, how are we supposed to bypass them?" I quietly ask. Even the slightest sound might make them all aware of our presence.
"Uhm, here" he says grabbing a nearby trash can and chunking it towards the opposite end. Apparently, there were a lot more zombies than I thought because at least 20 came running down the hallway looking for whatever made the noise. With them all distracted Jonah and I run for the staircase, skipping every other step to try and get to the lab faster. Once we get there, we are both exhausted and out of breath.
I scan my keycard and the large iron door opens up with a loud "Creeeeeeeeeeek" clearly showing that it hasn't been opened in quite a while. I can hear people talking in the lab and I recognize the voices immediately it's like they are long lost family members that I haven't seen since I was 6.
"We have to find a cure for this virus!" One yells out causing a zombie in a nearby room to bang on the wall.
"I have been working on it! Do you know how many attempts I have made? Do you realize that there might not even be a cure for the infected. Maybe they are just a lost cause Kaite!" Another shouts. The sounds are coming from my old lab partners Kaite Olsen, and Hayden Reaves. They were both the tied for top scientist in my class (Other and Brody of course. May he rest in peace) I'm shocked to see them both alive and well even with all of the terror and death that remains upstairs. They must have sensed us watching because Kaite is quickly walking over to check us out.
"Jane!? Omg Janey is that you, have you come to help us find a cure?!" She pulls me into a tight hug. "It's been so long since I've seen other people. I have been stuck down here with Hayden this entire time!" She speaks quickly and runs around to grab other things. "Ooooh Janey! Who is this hottie?!" She asks while dropping all of her things and running to Jonah like he is a rare artifact she saw in a Mayalen Museum.
"Thats Jonah." I say while picking up all of the things she once had.
"Hello" Jonah's tone is slightly uncomfortable. "Nice to meet you" he says looking down at her. Kaite isn't short, he is just so tall that he towers over her.
"Hello Hottie" she says biting her lip and twirling her hair
Me and Hayden exchange glances and start laughing at her behavior. "Kaite leave the poor man alone" Hayden tells her while tugging her coat.
"Ugh, y'all never let me have any fun" She turns away from Jonah and continues on with her task.
Hayden helps me set all of her things down and then pulls me into a hug. "I've missed you J" He says with a sad tone.
"Missed you too H" I say hugging him back. I missed this; I missed being able to laugh along to whatever he was watching on his phone. I miss being all of us being lab partners and having to dissect a frog for some random professor we all hated. Okay maybe not that part but you know what I am getting at. Reluctantly we finally pull apart when Jonah clears his throat.
"The car ride here made me famished; you got any grub?" Jonah asks with a jealous scowl
"Yes! The kitchen is this way." Kaite says with a devilish smile.
"On second thought I'll pass!" Jonah says turning around to sit on the nearby couch.
I let out a laugh at their banter and turn to Hayden. "Unlike him I am genuinely hungry. So, whatcha got to eat around here?" I say heading for the kitchen...
