Not really angst, but let's say a certain someone isn't very nice. By the way, there's a "Modern Family" reference in here, comment if you find it 🤪

|John and Alex, an eloped couple with two children, Frances and Philip, visit John's father. His father, Henry Laurens, lives in South Carolina, which John has been wanting to go back to for a while. But the thing is, Henry has never approved of Alex...|

John and Alex walked hand in hand up to John's old house in South Carolina. He hadn't been there for years, as he lived with his redheaded husband back in New York with their two kids, Frances and Philip. Frances was John's biological child, Philip was Alex's, which bothered nobody in the family.

However, the two spouses decided not bring their children this time. Last time, Henry basically hogged them and barely talked to the other men. But John couldn't blame his father. After all of the letters he sends his father from New York about his grandchildren, he must be excited to see them in front of his eyes. They just decided this time they would come alone.

John stopped right before the front door, making Alex stop as well. He took a breath before turning to the slightly taller man, brushing curls out of his face, behind his ear, anything to make them look better. Alex stood there, a small smile on his face. John trailed his hands down to Alex's chest, brushing his coat and waistcoat, making sure Alex looked presentable for his father.

Alex always thought John's actions were cute like this. Though there was purpose, he thought whenever John would nervously and quickly fix his husband's appearance, it was cute. John stopped and sighed one last time before looking over Alex, making sure he looked okay. His father was a rich and picky man, and it was bad enough he already didn't really like Alex.

Alex leaned down slightly and kissed John softly. John gladly accepted it before pulling away and giving his lover a smile. He turned to the front door and knocked on it, not sure if his father would just want him to walk in or not.

After a few seconds, Henry opened the door and laid eyes on his son, then giving him a smile. "Hello, Jack," he said, pulling his son into an embrace.

"Good morning, father," John replied, hugging his father back for a few seconds, then pulling away. Henry looked at his son for a second, acknowledging how much he's grown since he last seen him, which was a few years ago.

Henry then laid eyes on Alex and his smile dropped. He looked back at John, "You brought him?" He emphasized the 'him', making Alex cringe.

John looked back at Alex and furrowed his eyebrows in confusion, looking back at his father, "Of course, father. He's my partner and you know that." Henry did indeed know about their eloped and wrong marriage, however, he still loved his son and couldn't find it in his heart to let him go. But, he did have a hatred towards Alex.

Henry sighed angrily and stepped aside, allowing the couple in. Alex had a glimpse of Henry's face as he walked by, seeing a glare and scowl on his face. He swallowed and looked to John for guidance, who wasn't looking back at him.

They all walked into the living room and took a seat, Henry on his own couch and John and Alex on the other couch. Usually, when they were visiting someone they were comfortable around, Alex would rest his hand on John's thigh, however, both of them knew Henry would just get angrier if he saw that in his own house. So instead, they sat very close, John leaning on Alex a bit, which Henry mostly didn't care about.

Henry was the first to speak with a small smile, looking at John. He didn't care for talking to Alex, "So, where are my grandchildren?"

"Grandchild," Alex corrected under his breath so Henry couldn't hear, but John obviously heard it. He nudged Alex lightly and sighed. Alex hated when Henry would call Philip his grandchild. Maybe Frances had the Laurens blood, but Philip didn't. And if Henry didn't like Alex, why did Alex have to like Henry? If his husband's father would just keep pushing him away, then why should Philip be considered his family?
