After a grueling 46 hours in the car, they finally pulled into the driveway of Eleanor's beach house. Eleanor practically leaped out before the engine even stopped.
"Elle, wait!" Chris called, trying to grab her arm, but she slipped away with ease.
Eleanor raced to the front door, her face glowing with excitement. She reached into her pocket for the keys, only to come up empty-handed. A wave of panic set in as she patted every pocket and bag, her movements becoming more frantic by the second.
"I... I don't have the keys," Eleanor stammered, pacing in tight circles.
"What do you mean you don't have the keys?" Nate yelled, his voice rising with alarm.
"Relax. I've got them." Angel sighed, stepping up to the door and pulling the keys from her bag.
"Thank god Angel remembers everything," Matt said, grabbing Angel's bag. "Because if she didn't, you'd be biking back to Boston."
Angel smiled as she unlocked the door. Eleanor didn't wait—she sprinted inside, dashed upstairs, and threw her bag onto the bed in her shared room with Angel. But the excitement hadn't faded. Seconds later, she was running back downstairs, only to crash into Chris at the base of the steps.
"Elle, you've got to be more careful," Chris scolded, steadying her before heading up the stairs.
Eleanor rolled her eyes. Only Chris ever called her Elle. Everyone else stuck to Ella, but for some reason, it felt different coming from him.
"Yeah, Ella. Be more careful," Angel teased with a smirk as she passed by.
"Shut up," Eleanor grumbled, heading to the kitchen. "You know we don't like each other like that!"
"Uh-huh. Totally normal for a guy to have a special nickname for you," Angel replied, her tone dripping with sarcasm.
Before Eleanor could retort, Nick burst into the kitchen.
"GUESS WHO JUST GOT US INVITED TO A PARTY!" he shouted, grinning ear to ear.
Angel and Eleanor squealed in unison, their excitement echoing through the house. Matt and Chris made their way downstairs, curious about the commotion.
"When are you and Matt finally going to get together?" Eleanor whispered to Angel as they stood to the side.
Angel sighed, exasperated. "We're just friends, Ella."
"Mm-hmm," Eleanor hummed skeptically.
Eleanor swung open the fridge only to find it empty. "MATT!" she hollered.
"What?" Matt called back, appearing right behind her.
Startled, Eleanor turned sheepishly. "Oh... um, we have no food."
"Okay? And that's my problem how?" Matt teased, crossing his arms.
"I need you to run to the store," Eleanor said with a grin.
"Fine," Matt relented.
"I'll come with you," Angel chimed in.
"Nate and I are going too," Nick added. "We're picking up the drinks."
"So, Elle and I are just staying here?" Chris asked.
"Looks like it," Eleanor said as the group headed out the door.
With the house suddenly quiet, Eleanor and Chris found themselves scrolling aimlessly on their phones. Bored, Eleanor tossed hers aside and grabbed the remote.
"What are you watching?" Chris asked without looking up.
"Probably Flipped," Eleanor replied, curling up on the couch with a blanket.
Chris laughed, finally setting his phone down. "Remember when you made Nick and me watch that, like, ten times in a row?"
"That's the only way to watch it," Eleanor said, her face lighting up with a grin.
They both chuckled and settled into the movie. As it played, Eleanor scooted closer to Chris, who adjusted to make space.
An hour passed, and their friends still hadn't returned. With only thirty minutes left in the movie, Eleanor turned to Chris.
"I'm bored. Wanna do something fun?"
Chris raised an eyebrow. "Depends. What do you have in mind?"
"Take a nap with me?" Eleanor suggested, a teasing smile tugging at her lips.
Chris sighed. "Elle, that's not fun."
"For me, it is. We don't have food or drinks, so what else are we supposed to do?" Eleanor argued.
"Ugh, fine. Come here," Chris relented.
Eleanor walked over to the other side of the sectional and lay down next to him.
"I'm about to fall off the couch," she complained after a moment.
Chris chuckled. "Then just lay on top of me. It's not that big of a deal."
Eleanor hesitated but eventually rolled onto him, her head resting on his chest. She could hear his heartbeat, steady and comforting. Within minutes, she drifted off to sleep. It didn't take long for Chris to follow.
