Chris quickly pulled his hand away from Eleanor's back and stood, his movements sharp.

"I'm sorry," he said, his voice low, almost pleading.

"Stop. Just stop," Eleanor cut him off, her voice strained.

Chris's jaw clenched. "You know this isn't just my fault. You kissed me and expected me to just forget about it!" His voice began to rise, the frustration spilling over.

"Chris," Eleanor snapped, her tone matching his. "This—us—wasn't supposed to happen. So you bringing it up right now? It's pissing me off!"

Chris let out a bitter laugh. "Stop acting like you run the whole damn world, Ella."

"I'm not! You're the one acting like a complete dickwad right now!" she shot back, her voice shaking with anger.

For a moment, they just glared at each other, their breaths heavy with unspoken words and raw emotions.

"You know what?" Chris said, his voice dropping. "I'm done. I'm done with you."

Eleanor's anger wavered, giving way to something more fragile. "Chris, stop. Where are you going?" she asked, her voice laced with concern.

Chris didn't look back as he strode toward the front door. "I'm getting away from you," he muttered.

The door slammed shut behind him, the sound reverberating through the house like an exclamation mark.

Eleanor stood frozen for a moment, the weight of his words crashing down on her. Then the tears came, hot and uncontrollable, streaming down her cheeks. She sank to the floor, her back pressed against the wall, her body trembling as sobs wracked her chest.

This wasn't how things were supposed to go. The one thing she was desperate not to mess up had just walked out the door.

After what felt like hours, her breathing finally steadied. Wiping her swollen eyes, she pulled out her phone, trying to distract herself from the hollow ache in her chest. But as she scrolled, her heart sank further when she saw the post.
