The gym buzzed with energy as the Karasuno girls team practiced for their after school scrimmage. The atmosphere was noticeably different from usual. Volleyballs rebounded harder, serves were more precise, and the girl's voices rang out louder than ever.

The Shiratorizawa boy's team was well known throughout the prefecture for being immensely strong, but the girl's team was nothing to scoff at either. They too, were regular national contenders and would consistently sweep prefectural tournaments. No one on the team had expected to get a practice match with such a powerhouse school like them so early into the year. But somehow their coach had pulled it off, and before they knew it, match day had already arrived.

Everyone was super enthusiastic. Haru was giddy as could be and had practiced ten times more than usual when she heard the news. Even Michimiya, the normally astute and composed captain, couldn't contain her excitement. She tried to maintain a serious demeanour while keeping everyone in check, but everyone could see she was hiding a big smile.

Yet, some of the members weren't so happy about the match. They were first-years who barely showed up to practice.

"Why do we have to go up against Shiratorizawa of all schools? They're just gonna crush us in two sets..."

"Right? Ugh, I'm just not in the mood to go all out today."

They were at the back of the line for practicing spikes, just out of earshot of the third-years. But Haru had heard what they said and turned behind to face them with a frown."It's not every day that we get to play a match like this y'know. You should appreciate the opportunity Coach got for us." She said. As a fellow first-year, she wasn't afraid to confront them.

One of the girls, Fujiko, had immediately avoided Haru's gaze and zipped her lips tight. She was the more docile of the two. However, Kikuchi stared at Haru dead-on, challenging her.

"Yeah, whatever..." Kikuchi said, rolling her eyes.

Infuriating... Haru had to fight back the urge to snap. She took a deep breath, exhaled a simple "O-kay." and turned back around. It wasn't even that she wanted to be the better person. She just desperately wanted to avoid stirring up trouble. Especially on game day. If it wasn't for that fact, they probably would've been at each other's throats already.

It wasn't her first rodeo with Kikuchi either. They squabbled pretty often, or at least whenever she decided to actually show up to practice. Since the first time they met a few months ago, Haru had an inkling that she hated her for some reason. Not even disliked, no. Hated. Every time they talked she gave her the stink eye, and anything Haru would do she would scoff at. If she spiked: scoff. If she breathed: scoff. And god forbid she ever asked for pointers from Michimiya, because Kikuchi would scoff herself to death. Kikuchi hated that for some reason.

Practice went on fine for a bit. Everyone took their turns and the energy was still up. That was until it came around to Kikuchi's 3rd turn spiking. Anyone could see that she wasn't really trying. Her form was slack and her spikes were light-handed. Michimiya had stopped her after, trying to give her some well-needed pointers. But what did Kikuchi do?

She scoffed at her. Not at Haru this time but Michimiya. The captain of the team.

Michimiya was stunned, her eyes went as wide as a doe and her lips pursed open. It was completely silent, as if everyone had witnessed her get slapped right across the face. But she didn't say anything. She just nervously laughed as if Kikuchi had meant it as a joke.

Screw not stirring up trouble on game day. Haru would not let Kikuchi disrespect a senior like that, especially Michimiya who had always been a good friend to her regardless of hierarchy.
