WARNING: SLIGHT MANGA SPOILERS (KAGEYAMA BACKSTORY)

8 years ago — Early Summer

"Tobio help me clean up would you? Grandpa's friend is coming over soon." Kazuyo called out to his grandson from inside, sliding the backyard door open.

Tobio, who was rebounding a volleyball off the wall outside, stopped and turned. "Sure grandpa." He stood up and rushed inside.

Kazuyo handed him a cloth and gestured to one of the windows to wipe. Diligently, Tobio took it without question and got to work while his grandfather swept the floor. After a minute of concentration curiosity got the best of the boy. "Who's coming?"

His grandfather chuckled slightly. "Do you remember Nonohara Akira? We've watched a few of his Olympic games on the TV."

"I think so..." Tobio paused his wiping for a second, lost in thought. "He was that really good wing spiker."

"That's right." Kazuyo smiled widely. "I didn't tell you before but Grandpa used to be his coach, you see. He's in town for a while and says he'll drop by often."

"Really?" Tobio asked simply, but his eyes were bright and wide.

"Of course! Your grandpa is a lot cooler than you might think Tobio. I have a few connections." He winked.

Tobio hid a smile as he got back to wiping. He had never met a professional athlete before, let alone an olympian. Maybe he could train with him if he got lucky.

But alongside excitement, he of course felt something else. "I'm nervous."

"What are you nervous about my boy? He's a person, made of flesh and bones just like you and me! If anything you should be more nervous that he's bringing his daughter with him." Kazuyo smirked.

"His daughter?"

__________

"There's my star pupil!" Kazuyo said as he opened the door with a bright smile.

"Long time no see Coach!" Akira said happily as he reached out a hand for him to shake.

While the two adults reunited and shook hands, Tobio stared at the girl in front of him. They were the same age and around the same height, making it impossible to avoid each other. She wore an overzealous smile and directed it at him, which he returned with a mere blank expression. He hadn't liked the news that Akira's daughter would be coming along; it crushed his hopes of receiving any special training from Akira and instead reduced his role to that of a playmate.

More than that he barely got along with people his own age, let alone girls, so how could they expect him to become her friend?

Tobio inched slightly behind his grandfather which the old man had noticed immediately. "Oh right, this is my grandson Tobio. I see you've brought your daughter?"

"Yes, this is ▇▇. " Akira said with a pat to her head.

"Hi, sir!" She bowed to Kazuyo. "Hi Tobio!"

"Come on son, don't be shy." His grandfather said as he edged him towards her.

"Hi." Tobio huffed in an attempt to prove his grandfather wrong. He wasn't shy, it was just that he found it hard to get along with other kids. All they cared about were games or gossip.

"That's my boy. Now why don't you two play with each other while Akira and I catch up? There's a volleyball net set up out back."

"Really? Awesome!" Her eyes glimmered. "Come on!" She said as she grabbed onto Tobio's wrist, dragging him away.
