"My baby, my baby, you're my baby. Say it to me."

He could feel it. Her hands on it. She grazed his skin. Tracing each wound. She engulfed him. But he stayed still. He could feel it. It crawled into his heart. Her fingers seeming dangerous as she came closer. But he did not move back. He did not move back from her. The bandages swallowing his wounds carefully. She wrapped them around so gently. With such care that the boy could not fathom it. He did not understand why.
Cold hands. His hands were cold. His body shivered in the winter breeze. The air feeling painful on his skin. Her gaze focused on the goosebumps on his skin. She didn't feel cold. She didn't feel it. She was dressed for winter, accustomed to it. She understood it. Her hands were warm. Her hands touched his. Her hands touched his arm, his face. "What do you want?" She gave the boy no answer.
The coat that rested on her body slid off. Slowly, she put it on him. He didn't understand. His mind tried to put the pieces together, but they could not connect. "What's your name?" She asked him. He did not know whether to answer. But she had not once yet requested anything from him. She had helped him because she wanted to help him. She helped him because she was kind. Because she wanted to save him.
"Michael." He did not mind if everyone else in the world knew him by the name Kaiser. He wanted it to be only her that could address him as such. Michael. The name nobody ever once called him. Not even his own father. She smiled at him. Her smile so bright it was almost blinding. She was an unusual kid. He was so rough, scruffy, but she put her hands on him. Maybe it was the gloves. But she noticed his hands shivering.
Only one. She took one glove off and put it in his hand. "Nikita Moriah. But just call me Nikita." The girl loved people. Even people like him. But she didn't understand what a person like him was. He hesitated. Slowly, she grabbed the glove and slipped it over his fingers. But his other hand was cold. The second glove came off. She had more at home. But she did not believe he did. The glove became his. "Keep it." She whispered.
A favour. He did not owe her anything. She didn't want him to. "Me? Okay." He wouldn't object. He didn't understand it, but he would take a profit. Her hands were cold now. But the winter breeze didn't feel harsh on her skin. She touched the snow with her hands. Bare but soft. She took his. And so, she pulled him up. He stood on his feet in bewilderment. He felt warm. But he knew he'd have to hide it.
But when such a bright smile was directed at him, he couldn't help it. He was mesmerized. A snowball rolled in her hands. splatter. The snow on his neck. Her hands began to freeze but she did not complain. She didn't mind. He picked up a snowball. A big one. It landed right on her face. And for a second, she didn't move. Until she fell back in laughter. The boy didn't laugh. His mouth didn't move. But he didn't hate this. Her mouth emitted sounds of joy so easily. Slowly, she arose from the ground. Clasping his hands in hers.
A pause. "Michael, you're going to be mine." He didn't understand why. But she liked his company alot. So she decided she may as well keep him around. Nikita didn't really have that many friends. She was too bright for them. She had people who wanted to be her friend, yes. But they didn't want to be friends with her because of her. If it wasn't genuine, she wasn't sure she wanted it. But she was sure about him. Michael. No, Michael wouldn't leave her. Not like everyone else would.
Often her eyes directed to the bandages she had placed. Wondering who did that to her boy. But she didn't ask. She didn't think it was something she could ask about. She didn't want to. She just wanted to hold him in her hands until he felt something again. His eyes. So empty. They were so full. A place that reaches so far, but they were empty. An endless void. But Nikita would willingly enter that void. She would willingly be drowned in an eternal pit of darkness. For her boy.
She wanted him to know he was her boy. Know she cared for him. Cared for him like she would her child. Her baby. She adored him like one. His soft skin in hers. She wanted to walk through the void in his mind. She wanted to fill it up with each passing second. She wanted to flood his head with thoughts of her. Thoughts of the things she would do for him. They played like they were children. But he too, was only a child. But she knew he had seen things that no child should have had to see.
To her, not being confined in the space of adulthood was whimsical. To him, that freedom would be wonderful. She knew it. He knew it. He wanted to grow up, but she couldn't bear the thought of losing her childhood. Polar opposites in every way. But she was going to make him hers. They were only kids, but they had seen so much.
His eyes. So dull. But she didn't complain. She wanted to make it shine herself. He was so pretty, but so void of emotion. She didn't understand. She didn't understand how somebody could go a day without smiling or crying. It's all she ever did. It's all she could ever do. Feel. To her, it made her feel normal. That emotions would pass alongside every problem. But Michael. Michael didn't feel. He endured too much for a small child.
"Whenever you're ready. Even if it takes a hundred years. Whenever you're ready." She didn't have to specify what she was talking about. She meant the bruises, the eyes. She wanted to know what happened to the boy she wanted to protect. She was almost angry. Almost angry. Almost. Her hands brushed over his skin. The bruise on his face. It was red. She gritted her teeth.
Truthfully, the girl just wanted to save him. She wanted him to be okay. To have no worries of danger. To run around with gloves in winter. With coats in winter. With slippers in summer. She wanted so desperately for him to have what she did. She wanted to desperately for him to feel again. To fill that void in his heart. She wanted it so badly. She wanted to save him.
But she didn't realize that she was already his saviour.
