THE CHURCH IS ORNATED WITH bleeding Christ figures around the altar. It was the next day, Friday the 7th February. Polly Gray sat alone at a pew with her head bowed.
Suddenly the door opened and Thomas strode in. He didn't pause and simply walked down to Polly's aisle. She didn't dare to turn around, until her nephew sat down next to her.
"I have ten minutes.", Tommy said briskly,"What do you want?"
"An explanation.", Polly firmly ordered him.
The man tensed and asked,"An explanation of what?"
"Of what's so secret.", Polly started and added,"Of what's so secret that not even Lu is aware of it."
At this Tommy clenched his jaw as his aunt continued,"People round here talk. Some of them work at the BSA. I have been talking to wives of factory hands.Detectives have been asking questions in the proofing shops."
The young men looked at the iconography. He didn't care, why would he? The only thing that irked him was Polly assuming that he kept secrets from his woman.
"Nothing happens in the factory without you knowing it.", she continued, making him turn towards her. "Speak. God and aunt Polly are listening."
At this Thomas gulped,"It was meant to be routine. I had a buyer in London for some motorcycles. I asked my men to steal me four bikes with petrol engines.", he facepalmed his face,"Guess they were drunk. There's a still inside the factory, makes tram line gin.", he stopped,"They picked up the wrong fucking crate."
This peaked Polly's curiosity as she asked,"And do tell, what was in the crate?"
He took a moment before saying,"They boy took it to Charlie's yard as agreed.Inside the crate we found 25 lewis machine guns with 10.000 rounds of ammunition. 50 semi automatic rifles, 200 pistols with shells—", this made Polly cross herself, as he continued,"All bound of Lybia.Sitting right there in Charlie's yard."
Polly looked at him in shock and demanded,"Jesus Tommy. Please tell me you threw them in the cut."
Tommy clenched his jaw, looking straight ahead without answering. This made Polly understand as she started to punch his arm, before he took her arm.
"That's why they sent this copper from Belfast."
"Maybe.Maybe not.", Thomas answered vaguely, making Polly shake her head.
"So Lu was right.", the woman scoffed, before saying,"Thomas Shelby, you are a bookmaker, a robber, a fighting man, but you are not a fool—"
