As I'm opening my Dr.Pepper, I hear two people running behind me. I turn to see two tall figures jogging towards me. It was Sodapop and Steve.
"Fancy meeting you here, Peach." Soda said. I rolled my eyes.
"Peach? Really?" I asked. He shrugged.
"I'll try harder next time."
"So," Steve said, breaking the awkward silence. "What brings you to little ol' Tulsa this fine, fine summer?"
"Well, my dad got into trouble with the law, so my mama and I, we had to move." I paused to take a swig of my Dr.Pepper. "So now I'm in the middle of nowhere, which is full of creeps in blue mustangs, and DX's filled with desperate girls." I smiled sarcastically and took another small sip. Soda stopped in his tracks, putting the pieces together.
"Wait, wait. A blue mustang?" He asked as he gave Steve a nervous glance. I nodded.
"Why, what is it?"
"Listen, Sweet cheeks,"
"Another awful pet name."
"Whatever. Stay away from that car. The guys who own that car are Socs. And all they want to do is start a fight with every Greaser they see." He said in one breath. I looked at him with a confused look on my face.
"Um, I'm sorry I don't speak 16-year-old-boy. Come again? Preferably in English this time?" He sighed.
"The Socs live on the West side, and they're stuck up, rich little brats. Us Greasers live on the East side. We don't have a lot of money normally, so they make fun of us for it. Always looking for a fight a Soc is." Soda explained.
"So, what am I?" I asked. "A Greaser or Soc?"
"You, my good friend, are a Greaser. We're better than them anyway. Who needs a Soc when you have us?" Steve said, putting his arm on my shoulder. Soda nodded in agreement and did the same thing. Soon enough we walked up to my neighborhood and I stopped.
"Aw, why'd you stop Sunshine?"
"Again with the pet names Soda!" I laughed. "This is my neighborhood. Ya'll wanna come meet my Mama?" Soda and Steve nodded.
"Then you can come and meet the gang!" Steve said excitedly. I nodded and led them inside my small trailer where my Mama was eating cereal and reading the newspaper.
When she heard me come in she looked up and saw the two boys behind me, she raised an eyebrow.
"Would you like to introduce me to your new friends?" I nodded while setting her stuff on the table.
"This is Sodapop and Steve." I explained. "They work at the DX down the road." Mama nodded and smiled.
"Well nice to meet you. I'm Mary, Y/N's mother." Soda took her hand and shook it.
"It's a pleasure for the both of us ma'am." He walked into the kitchen where I was standing and wondered into my room. Steve was standing behind me waiting for me to get stuff ready.
"Hey Soda! You want an ice-pop?" I asked as I handed Steve one.
"Sure." He called back. I grabbed two and wandered into my room where he was sitting on my bed admiring my things. Then he pulled something out from behind his back.
"Nice teddy bear." He said, holding out a teddy I've had since I was 2.
"Thanks." I replied. "Now, lets get going. The sun is about to set and I wanna meet your friends." He nodded and set the teddy bear back down on my bed. I kissed Mama on the head and warned her I wouldn't be home until after dark.
"11:30. That's when you need to be home." She said.
"Don't worry Ms. l/n. I'll make sure she gets home by then." Soda assured her. She nodded.
"Be careful." She yelled as I walked out the door.

As we walked half a mile up the road, eating ice-pops, I realized this is the happiest I've been in a long time. I checked my watch. 7:30. I still had 4 hours to meet the gang, hang out for a while, and get home. We walked up to a sketchy looking trailer park and Soda sighed.
"Home sweet home." He murmured. I heard a scream and a crash coming from one of the houses and saw a boy, about my age, running out of the house, and into a new one.
"Listen, Y/n, not saying you can't handle yourself, but the guys are a little..." Steve started
"Much." Soda finished. "But don't worry Sunshine. We got you if anything goes south."
"OK so first of all, please stop it with the pet names I'm begging you. Second of all, relax you guys. I can do this. I'm cool." Soda looked at Steve and shrugged.
"Whatever you say, kiddo." Soda said. "Also, I'll never stop." He winked and walked toward the house the boy just ran into.
