The rain feels extra persistent today- taunting, even.
Ever since you'd woken up on this rainy Monday morning, you'd forced your mind to stay locked on the idea of thinking about absolutely nothing. The gears had shifted into auto pilot the instant your feet hit your cold wood floors- partially because you don't want to think about the consequences of last night, but mostly because you don't want the thoughts of the consequences to overtake the serenity you feel when memories of last night in Charlie's kitchen make appearances in your thoughts. But part of you is equally afraid of how good you feel when Charlie crosses your mind as well.
You've got too much to do. There is too much to be done right now to complicate things with feelings; with letting someone into your life.
You put your car in park in the Chinook Pharmacy and Variety Store parking lot, stretching across the passenger seat to try and see if they're open yet. There's distant movement in the store, hopefully an indicator that their employees have started for the day. The plan is to get in, get a Plan B pill, and get out- you had told Cora you'd only be about thirty minutes late getting to the cafe.
The car heater feels particularly relaxing this morning, causing you to take a few extra moments relishing in the warmth before turning your car off and stepping out into the freezing cold rain. The wet asphalt squelches under your boots with each rushed step as you jog into the store, the interior's temperature not nearly as satisfying as your car was.
The Chinook Pharmacy and Variety store is small, as expected, and filled with the most random of items. It's good to know that there's a place where you can purchase snacks, holiday decorations, random signage, hats, and morning after pills all in one place. You had remembered going to a little town just outside of the city you grew up in filled with little stores like this, with the most amazing apple pie shop on the end of the street. The town would flood with visitors from the city around the holidays, considering it was one of the only towns nearby that would actually get snow once or twice every winter. The reminder of the memory from home makes this place feel a bit nostalgic, comforting your muscles that were originally tense given the circumstances surrounding your visit to the store.
It takes a few steps into the store to identify a few makeshift windows by the back wall, which must be where the pharmacy is located. An older lady with oversized glasses sits behind the window, flipping through a large book that appears to be a catalog. Her eyes flicker up as you approach the counter.
"Good morning." She says, a warm smile appearing on her lips. Her movements are shaky, including her lips as she fights to keep the smile. Her name tag reads Mabel.
"Good morning." You return an equally-warm smile, relieved you're the only person in the store. "Can you assist me with a purchase?"
"Of course, dear. What can I help you with?"
"I, um... I need a Plan B pill, please."
She leans forward slightly, raising her brows. "Sorry dear, I don't have the best hearing. Can you repeat that?"
You clear your throat, leaning in slightly. "A Plan B."
She reaches up, readjusting her glasses and narrowing her eyes as if she's trying to focus on reading your lips. She still doesn't appear to have heard you.
You briefly sigh before raising your voice. I need a Plan B pill, please."
"A... Plan B..." She mumbles, confusion on her face.
"Yes. You know, like... the morning after pill? Plan B?"
Recognition suddenly lights up in her eyes. "Oh! Yes. Plan B. We don't have that one, but we have the generic brand. Will that work?"
