Something slammed into him before he reached me. He landed on his feet and snarled at the figure but stopped when he saw who it was. I Looked up at the newcomer and saw my dad growling at the wolf. Just then, my mother ran up to me and nuzzled me hard, licking my head and sniffing all around me.

"I'm fine, Mom. I could've handled it." I mumbled, trying not to get knocked over by her aggressive affection. I looked back over at my dad and the wolf. they had both stopped growling, the younger wolf bowing to my father.

"I apologize. I did not know that this was your offspring." He spoke respectfully, and I knew that this was what you say if something like this happened. I tucked it in my brain for safekeeping. My dad nodded and turned back to me. "Are you okay?"

"I'm fine!" I barked happily as Mom kept nuzzling me. 'I could've taken him..." I muttered unhappily. Dad sighed from his nose and shook his head, placing his forehead on mine for a moment before turning to look at the rest of the wolves. I hadn't noticed, but they had gathered from the shadows around Greyfur, all staring at my dad.

They were all different colors and sizes, but none had my fur color. It was awkward. Dad was standing tall with his chest slightly puffed out, so I did the same. I probably looked stupid, but nobody said anything. Some of the wolves stared at me, no doubt wondering why my fur was this color despite my parent's fur and I became a bit self-conscious again.

Father spoke in his loud, booming voice, "This is Snowstar, my offspring. She will be my inheritor to the title 'Alpha' of this pack when she comes of age. Does anyone disagree?" Nobody spoke up. "Then, let it be known." He lifted his head to the sky and howled, then the other wolves did the same. It sounded like a song, a song welcoming me.

When it was over, Mom and Dad started walking in a different direction. Mom spoke to me in a low voice, "Why don't you talk to the others, huh? I bet they would like to get to know you." She smiled, then trotted up to stand beside my dad, so I looked around. Nobody was my age or height. They were all adults, so I knew nobody would want to talk to me.

But then, the wolf called Greyfur trotted up to me. "So, you're the Alpha's child, huh?" He spoke. "Yeah!" I squeaked. I tried to look mad, but that just made him laugh. "What's funny?" I asked furiously. He stopped and looked at me, a smile on his face. "You're going to be a great Alpha, though you need to work on your scary faces."

I puffed my mouth in indignation. We talked for a while and I was glad to know not only that there were other pups I could play with, but he wasn't much older than me, still a pup, although close to adolescence. My anger at his hostility faded an I just saw him as my first friend.

I hadn't noticed we had stopped, so I bumped into a grumpy-looking wolf in front of me. He turned back, glaring at me. "Watch where you're going, will you?" He asked grumpily. I puffed out my chest and said, "Yes sir! Sorry, sir!" He stared at me then nodded. "Something good, going to come out of that kid, just like her mom...."

I wagged my tail and beamed with excitement. My mom looked back at me and nodded for me to come to her. "We're getting close to the entrance of the den. Are you ready?" I gazed up at her, taking in her gentle face and big brown eyes. I also thought about our appearance, how my eyes were big too, but a white-ish blue. I nodded in response.

"I was born ready!"

She chuckled at my confidence. "So feisty," I heard her murmur as we approached a snow-covered wall with vines in front of us. It was so well hidden that I thought we were going to run into it. Then, Mom and Dad nosed their way through the vines. I hesitated for a second, then followed after them.

I can't fully explain it, but the sun was shining on the snow, creating sparkles and shimmers all over the den. The caves were lit up by torchlight, with the light seeping through the curtains and windows. One cave stood out from all the rest, the Alpha Families den. A playground was in the plaza, sparkling like everything else. It felt like home

I marveled at everything. It was so beautiful, so familiar, so... I can't even express how I felt at the time, but it's how I feel every time I go home. I gasped. Mom looked down at me, love and affection full in her eyes. Dad had an air of pride around him, proud of his home, proud of his pack. I felt proud too, even if I couldn't explain it.

"This is your home," Mom whispered to me. I looked at her, astonishment in my gaze. This beautiful, wonderful wonderland was my home?! Was she kidding? As my astonished look dragged on, she chuckled again and nuzzled me. "Yes, this is your home. Beautiful, hmm?" I nodded, still astonished.

Dad walked next to Mom, looking at me gently. "Remember, this will be the home you are fighting for. You understand?" I nodded enthusiastically. I will protect my home with every breath of my body, until my last.
