Don't you get it?

Make me understand

You do this with ease, teaching me things I never would have known without you. You taught me how to love, but it was all wrong. Your tricks and methods are not what others please.

Make me understand

Drinking in your basement out of porcelain tea cups with flowers around the rim. It strings as it goes down my raw throat but I swallow anyway. I find that is often the case, even in situations not like this. I hope after this time I will feel normal. I hope after this time I will feel happy. I stare at the liquid in the cup and see myself looking back. When I look up I see you tilting your head to the side. I hate it when you do that, especially with that tone in your voice, one you would only use for a heedless child. Even though you are older than me I often see myself as the same. I know that is not the same for you.

Make me understand

It's easy to learn when you're pressed together in a dark room. Your hand lays on my hip as you whisper your secrets into my mouth. You swallow me into your bed, and lick me with your lies.

Make me understand

Later that night you ask if I am scared. I know deep down I am but right now I'm not much of anything. I am floating above my body, I am not there. I've figured you out.

Make me understand

The bruises on my thighs show me what happens when I truly don't understand. I lay in the fields and think of what would happen if I did. I wish I understood. I feel the blades of grass poke through my hair. I feel safe here, safest when I'm alone. Only then do I understand.
