Maxine

We were on our way back to Adrian's mansion. After our “little incident” Louis told us that when he was done at the phone repair shop he stopped at the mansion to see how things were. According to him most things have already been fixed and new guards were already assigned to the front gate. Which meant we could go back.

Most importantly, my father's men haven't been seen since we left.

I needed to come up with an excuse. I had to find a way to get them to stop near Haven park somehow. I looked out of the window and my mind drifted towards the shops nearby. Maybe I could ask them to stop at the pharmacy.

“Can we stop at the pharmacy near Haven park?” I asked, glancing towards Louis who was looking at me through the car mirror.

“Why do we need to stop at the pharmacy?” Adrian asked.

“It's personal.” I stared at him, annoyed. He stared at me for a couple of seconds and clenched his jaw.

“Louis, stop at the pharmacy around the corner.” he ordered.

“No. Stop at the one near Haven park. It's the only pharmacy that has…t-the right size.” I snapped.

“Size?” Adrain looked at me confused. I rolled my eyes and shifted towards the window turning my back on Adrian. Size? Really was that the best excuse I could come up with? My father would've been disappointed if he heard me right now. Not that I care.

“Just stop at that pharmacy. Or I'll find a way there myself.”

The car stopped at the pharmacy and a small smirk appeared on my lips. I turned towards Adrian holding out my palm.

“I don't have money.” I shrugged, knowing it would be suspicious if I went in without.

He slipped his hand into his pocket, grabbed the card and placed it on top of my palm. “Don't take too long Maxine,” he warned.

I opened the door and shut it behind me. The wind blew my hair strands in different directions and I inhaled the fresh air. People walked past me and I rushed into the pharmacy. The doorbell rang indicating a customer, I closed it and I hurried to the cashier.

“There's a suspicious man following me. Can I leave through the back door?” I asked, pretending to be scared as I looked around nervous.

“Do I need to call the police?” the lady asked, now looking worried as she glanced towards the door with her hand on the telephone.

“No it's okay. He won't see me if I use the back door.” my hands trembled and I took rapid breaths on purpose.

I can't believe I'm doing this.

“Follow me.” She quickly led me to the back door and I thanked her before walking away.

I let out a heavy sigh. I'm going without a gun, this is so foolish of me. Even worse, I'm going alone to meet someone who's identity I don't even know. The only thing I know for sure was that something was wrong with my mother. She hasn't called back and this person must know something.

I moved through the alley and stepped out in between the buildings. I pulled out my phone and sent a message to the number telling the person I'm here. Peeking around the corner and quickly crossed the road to the other side.

A minute later I'm in the park scanning the area. It wasn't as busy as it normally was. I know that because when I was younger I used to come here with my mother. We'd make sandwiches together and hold a big picnic. Just so that we could get away from my father for a few minutes.
