Chapter 8: Override and Overcome

Run incredibly fast on foot while sprinting through the foliage, keeping a manned VELOCIPOD close behind you. However, the terrain is challenging, uneven, and dense, and Dash must follow the narrow trail that winds through the undergrowth. A swarm of flies fusses in the air up front. Dash appears out of nowhere and speeds right through the storm! Dash's face was splattered by bugs like a windshield on a highway.

"AGGCCHH!" Dash stumbles and falls to the ground. Unharmed but utterly disgusted, Dash cleans his teeth and face of bugs. After a Velocipod jumps out of the undergrowth, he takes off and races across the jungle. Dash is sprinting when he grabs a long vine, which causes him to launch himself in a broad arc that surprises the pursuing guard. He blasts off into the forest, shooting past Dash. With a rocky landing on his feet, Dash lets go of the vine and charges forward.

A Velocipod burst out of the brush, closing in on Dash with menacing speed. Miraculously, Dash accelerated, staying just ahead of it. In a split-second decision, he spotted another vine, grabbed it, and was launched upwards above the trees. Dash burst through the canopy, flailing, completely out of control. Looking down, he saw the treetops suddenly dropping away. His screams filled the air as he landed on a Velocipod! Luck seemed to be on his side as Dash found himself perched on the speeding vehicle. With wide eyes, he watched as the startled guard spun around to face him. The guard swung, but Dash dove and retaliated with a punch. It connected! Energized by his success, Dash laughed, landing punch after punch, unaware that there was no one at the controls. As Dash looked up, he saw a rock wall looming ahead. Pointing frantically, he tried to warn the guard, but it was too late. The guard struck Dash, knocking him off, and the Velocipod crashed into the cliff face, exploding in a fiery blaze.

Dash fell through the dense foliage, desperately grabbing at branches to slow his descent. With a final, desperate reach, he caught hold of a sturdy limb, bringing himself to a sudden stop. Panting heavily, his heart racing, he looked down to see his feet dangling just above the jungle floor. Relief flooded through him, and he dropped to the ground, letting out a triumphant whoop. His celebration was short-lived, however, as his loud cry alerted two guards on velocipods to his presence. They turned their vehicles towards him, and Dash knew he had to move fast. Bolting into action, he accelerated to breakneck speed, smashing through foliage and narrowly avoiding collisions with trees and rocks.

Suddenly, a lagoon loomed ahead. With the velocipods closing in, Dash took a deep breath and ran straight at the water's edge. To his amazement, he had enough speed to run across the water's surface, weaving around volcanic rocks that jutted out. The guards opened fire, their shots strafing the water as Dash reached the other side and darted into a cave. The second velocipod pulled up short at the cave entrance, opting to go around instead. Inside the cave, Dash ran with the velocipod hot on his heels, weaving around rocks to put some distance between them. But then he saw the second velocipod coming straight at him. With no escape, Dash stopped suddenly, dropping beneath the water's surface just as the velocipods collided with a resounding boom.

Bob and Helen ran through the jungle, their breath coming in ragged gasps, not from exhaustion but from the adrenaline-fueled sprint.

"I should've told you I was fired, I admit it, but I didn't want you to worry," Bob confessed between breaths.

"You didn't want me to worry??" Helen shot back, her frustration evident. "And now we're running for our lives through some godforsaken jungle!"

Bob, still trying to keep things light despite the dire situation, replied, "You keep trying to pick a fight, but I'm still just happy you're alive." His words hung in the air as they continued their desperate attempt to find the kids.
