Heeseung POV:
I sat among my comrades in the army truck, journeying towards the ominous conflict ahead. I played with the ring that tightened around my finger. The memory of us reciting our vows, promising to stand with each other thick and thin, in sickness and health, together for eternity. It's only been a couple of hours, and I already miss my girl...
This wasn't my choice. I never wanted to be apart of this battle. I was conscripted to fight for the Korean War because of Kim Il-Sung's ambition to unify Korea under a communist government. My face remained stoic. But I had to remember who I was fighting for. I kept telling myself that, to at least ameliorate the situation.
Suddenly, the troop commander stops the car and orders us to race to the tent. My comrades and I hurdle out the truck and enter the tent meeting the director of operations. He elucidated our tasks and objectives in the fight. We assented to our objectives and began to return to the army truck, where I met up with my new comrades. But deep inside, I felt apprehensive about the whole thing.
"I wish everyone good luck, and let's fight well." One of my comrades speaks, offering well-wishes to everyone and urging us to fight bravely, infusing us with hope we fear of losing. "My name is Park Jongseong." I nodded my head at him, as I thanked him for his generous words. He gave me a small bit of hope through this daunting war.
Another of my comrades pats his shoulder and gazes at him. "Well Park Jongseong, take care of yourself out there. I'm Yang Jungwon." Jungwon glances at me fiddling with my ring and smiles. "You have a wife?" I quickly look up and brushed my legs. "Uhm, yes I do. She's my everything." I smiled gently.
"I'll look out for you then. You've got someone waiting for you at home." Jongseong sends me an assuring nod I express my gratitude. "I'm Lee Heeseung. You two better take care of yourselves too. Give it your all and come back in one piece." We share a chuckle of the mixture of emotions in the moment.
As we drew nearer, my anxiety intensified. Thoughts of her consumed me...I lacked strength during training, yet her presence imbued me with courage. With her by my side, I felt invisible. Unfortunately, that's not the case. Yet, my love for her propels me forward. The image of her smile upon my return sustains me, the sole beacon of hope in my journey.
The reverie of my thoughts shattered with the sudden eruption of gunshots and bomb blasts. Panic etched itself onto our faces as the car screeched to a stop. The moment we had been bracing for had arrived.
The war begins.
